Best way to clean around an ilostomy stoma

Posted by dona46 @dona46, Jan 13 4:19pm

I have been using Origins Checks and Balances. It is intended to be a face wash. It is easy to rinse off and leaves the skin feeling very clean without any hint of lotion or residue. I see others are recommending Ivory soap. I think I tried that early on, but I will try it again. Any other recommendations?

Also, I have been removing the pouch, then showering and washing the area around the stoma carefully. Then drying off and using adhesive remover to get any remaining adhesive off before applying the new pouch. I am thinking maybe I should use the adhesive remover first then shower and wash the area.

Which way works best for you?

Not my set of posts...but I would clean the adhesive first before the shower. I do with a loop colostomy. I also use aloe vera soap with no problems. Don't know if I would use Ivory. Traditionally it's been a wonderful soap but who knows for sure now? The laws governing the manufacturing industry are far from clear.

@piki Is Aloe Vera a brand name? What is it exactly? A picture or link to a source would help.

@dona46 Aloe vera is the name of the succulent plant used in making the soap. We buy the soap from a bulk food store and have used it for decades. For some reason I cannot get my photo into this post. Google 'aloe vera soap' and go to images and you'll see photos of the soap

@piki Thanks for the additional information. My understanding is lot's of different folks make soap with aloe vera in it. Problem is most also put other stuff in the soap, often stuff that like creams that leave residue hat would not be good for adhesive bonding.

@dona46 We have purchased the aloe vera soap from the same store for probably 40 years now. I never inquired about the manufacturer or the soap ingredients but it certainly has not left any cream on my body (that I'm aware of.) I'll phone the store this morning and ask about it. It's one of several different soaps that this manufacturer makes.

I am on various Ostomy websites and I have heard people say that using Head and shoulders shampoo as a body wash due to the zinc content is helpful for skin healing and a clean rinse. I hope this is helpful.

Interesting. I have never considered Head and Shoulders. I would like to hear from others who have used it.

@dona46 If you try H&S, look for the Classic version, which has zinc without a lot of other stuff.
