Best Calcium Supplement?
Which is the best type of calcium supplement? I've been taking calcium citrate (Citracal) which I understand is more easily absorbed than calcium carbonate (Caltrate). Most recently I've been hearing about calcium phosphate as an alternative. I like that it is available as a powder and may be less constipating than calcium citrate but it seems that is calcium phosphate is more for pets. Your thoughts?

I take calcium citrate petites ( 200mg per withD3). I am able to supplement calcium in food when I need to with the 200mg. Has to be taken with food. I keep close track of how much I am taking in with each meal and snacks.
Calcium in food comes first, supplemented by a petite if I need so I will make 1200 mg daily. I am on Evenity so it is even more important to make sure I am taking enuf calcium. Remember that evenity draws calcium from the blood which is needed for bones. Hypocalcimia is potentially dangerous.

3 ReactionsI believe the brand you take is very important. I was told by my dietitian that supplement need to have the USP on the label or get a pharmaceutical grade. I get all mine- recommended by my oncologist, from Full Scripts. I get 35% off so really very comparable.
I know not all doctors believe this because my PCP doesn’t .

1 ReactionSomething with Fortibone in it. I drink algae cal collagen. Citrate only absorbs about 5%, don’t waste your $. …look for natural sources. Also I take vitamin D3 ( not made in China) and Australian K2. They all work together. I’ve just hit my 6 months on Tymlos. I can feel my bones getting stronger. Even a hug used to hurt my ribs. I’ve had 4 vertebral fractures in one year. Just doing normal house cleaning. Conclusion is Calcium citrate isn’t doing you any good. Warm wishes, E

1 Reaction@daisy17 I also started the Seen chew, above the 500mg calcium I make sure I am getting calcium from my diet. I added more D3 and MK7. Not sure if MK 7 is as good as MK 4??. The chews are great, hoping they will work for my supplement. I like getting food based products. Also do weight training and protein.

1 Reaction"Calcium citrate is better absorbed than calcium carbonate by approximately 22% to 27%, either on an empty stomach or co-administered with meals."
Quote from research article:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11329115/
Here is a video by 2 doctors with one of them explaining why he chose Calcium Citrate over Carbonate for the line of bone supplements he developed:
Excerpt from transcript at about 41:52
Calcium Sources and Recommendations
" ... walk us down how you decided to use calcium citrate as the calcium in the bone specific mineral products ... "
In one's diet calcium is mostly in the form of Calcium Carbonate. So between that and my PPI Omeprazole (brand name Prilosec), Calcium Citrate supplements seem the obvious choice. If you do not take anti-acid medications, then perhaps it does not matter much which elemental form your calcium is in.
@clh222 You can take MK4 along with MK7, which is what I do. I take 180mcg Menaquinone-7 (MK7) - TrueVantage brand and 45,000 mcg (45 mg) of vitamin K2 (menaquinone-4) - Life Extension K2 High Potency brand.
This is what AI Assist says: “Taking vitamin K2 in both MK-4 and MK-7 forms together can be beneficial, as they have different properties and roles in the body. MK-4 has a shorter half-life and is quickly metabolized, while MK-7 has a longer half-life and remains active for a longer period, supporting continuous bone and cardiovascular health. Combining both forms may provide comprehensive support for bone health and calcium metabolism.”

Just reading this now. Can you send the research?
@daisy17
We must always remember that the Japanese research that revealed the great benefit of Vit K used 45mg off MK-4. OSTEO K Minis provides that in a divided dose of 3 15mg daily.

2 Reactions@lizzie73 Thank you for that information. I couldn't find an Osteo K MK-4 product on Amazon that had 15mg doses. I found one that had 22,500mcg pills that should be taken twice a day to reach 45,000mcg. However, it also contained 1000 IU of Vitamin D and since I already take a daily vitamin containing Vit D, I would prefer an MK-4 supplement without added Vit D.
I also read an article that said taking MK-4 in one daily 45,000 dose was okay, saying: "MK4's serum half-life is roughly two hours — and that rapid disappearance from blood isn't a weakness. It's the opposite. Your body pulls MK4 straight into the brain, bone, kidney, pancreas, and reproductive organs. What leaves the bloodstream fastest may be doing the most work. If a nutrient's invisible in a blood draw, it's often because it already reached where it needs to be."

3 Reactions@lizzie73 Maybe I am reading the Osteo K Minis bottle wrong, but a serving is 2 capsules, twice daily. Each 2 capsules is 22.5 MG so you are taking two doses of 22.5 mg to get 45 mg and not the three 15 mg doses that you reference above. I am surprised Osteo K does not have a dosing that would equal three 15mg doses for the day to match the Japanese study.
