Bent finger straightener
Five weeks ago I dislocated my left little finger and it broke in three places.
The ring finger was somewhat squashed.
As they heal, they are bending inwards at the middle joint which is where the damage was done.
The consultant showed me exercises to straighten the finger, and I can straighten the ring finger somewhat, in hot water, but then it bends again.
The little finger is worse, and I have not dared try to straighten it very much because of the breaks.
I see there are finger straighteners/splints that one can buy.
After five weeks with a lot of scar tissue formed, is it too late?

@v8auto There are so many variables here, this is a subject best discussed with a qualified hand surgeon. Interestingly, I met with a hand surgeon yesterday about my failing wrist, and he also examined my bent ring and pinky fingers, both from damage a while ago. He said there are therapied for the ring finger (including the splints you mentioned), but that the pinky has tendon damage which is very difficult to correct.
Can you consult a hand surgeon, or at least get a referral to a certified hand therapist for further evaluation?

3 ReactionsMassaging the scar tissue is really important. Massage it hard and try to break it up. Do it every day. My thumb got caught on an ice auger and wrapped around the shaft 3 times. I had to reverse the auger to get my thumb off. It was obvious it was broken. Pulled the tendons from my forearm. Surgery fixed it with a pin and a lot of time. Still not perfect and it bends weird sometimes. Some days are better than others but it took over a year to get better. Hope this helps in some way.

1 Reaction@v8auto -- Hope you can get an excellent assessment from a knowledgeable and caring hand specialist... this is key to determining how to proceed with everything that's going on.
Some suggestions for starters: don't do anything that hurts, moist heat several times per day, do recommended hand therapy that doesn't hurt, be gentle, maybe red light / NIR therapy could help heal the tendons, ligaments, internal joint capsules, swollen tissues, and even manage scar tissue.
Your injuries may take several months to heal, but you may feel small improvements in a matter of days / weeks... which will encourage your continued treatments. Hope this is helpful.
All the best!

Thankyou all.
I saw a doc at the orthopaedic clinic today, removed the strapping that's been on four weeks.
Now I'm being referred to the hand therapist.
Meanwhile I'll try to move the fingers around and massage the scar tissue.
Oddly enough, it was a wood auger that did the damage, 50ft up a tree on a ladder. A 26" auger and a 36V geared drill. You don't want to tangle with those things.

1 Reaction@v8auto cant imagine that felt good. Mine was just a little 20v dewalt running a 7 inch ice auger. I feel for you there. I know that pain. When I did it, I finished setting up my tip ups and fished for an hour before I couldn't take it anymore and went to urgent care. A plastic surgeon did my surgery. Orthopedic surgeon said it was beyond him.
@livininthestix
Funny isn't it that one can do some stuff before the pain really kicks in. I lowered all my kit down from the tree, drove the Land Rover down to the field gate and opened it - it doesn't open easily - closed it, drove up to the house and parked.
Did you catch anything?

1 Reaction@v8auto It is pretty funny when you know you hurt yourself but refuse to accept it for a little while. Ha ha ha. Glad you got out of the tree ok amd made it put of there. And I caught a 12" walleye....wasn't legal so I had to let it go. Gave my minnows to a guy out on the ice and showed him my hand and he said I better get to the Doctors.
@v8auto I am glad you sought out orthopedic consultation. I am an Occupational therapist who treated hand issues primarily for decades. The hand is very complex and soft tissue healing is sometimes more challenging than fracture healing. Your hand therapist will be so instrumental in your recovery but be consistent with the program they give you. Definitely keep massaging the scar as scar remodeling takes months. Good luck! Susan

4 Reactions@3sew1 Hello Susan
Thankyou. I know from previous experience that soft tissue can take a long time. I only just cleared a problem in my forearm when this happened.
In addition to the finger that was broken, I find that the ring finger has crush damage at the MCP joint, and it is stiff at the knuckle because it was buddy bandaged to the little finger and they both were folded in to the palm to keep a greenstick in place, so now the knuckle of the ring finger also does not want to move.
Under hot water there is better mobility but back on dry land not so much.
And my hand is still so swollen that I have not been able to take my watch off since April 9, lucky it's waterproof.
I straightened my trigger finger with a device Oval 8. It worked and straightened my finger. You are able to use your hand & finger. Just can’t move / bent it. FWIW. Blessings
