Article: Things to know to advocate for your care

Posted by frances007 @frances007, Dec 27, 2024

in reply to @babyblues262 I just thought of something. I get this magazine called IG Living and they have an article this month on Medical Gaslighting. The article talks about how doctors, mainly men, try to convince women that all of their problems are either depression, hormonal etc, and they "brush them off." The article was written by a doctor and gave the following example: A woman had been complaining of xyz, doctor brushed her off, so she took her husband to the next appointment. Well, not only did the doctor come up with the right diagnosis, but spent the entire hour explaining it to the husband. This is becoming more commonplace (probably not at the Mayo) and that the bottom line is that a person really has to learn to be a strong advocate. Just like the article said, "we know our bodies better than any doctor." Good luck

Such a difficult and critical topic, thank you for bringing it up. I am comforted to read your post and interested in the article you reference. Is it something I can find online?

I am so sorry! This link takes you to the magazine and then you can click on "current issue" and read. It is a free publication you can get either online or paper, which is what I get. I have been up for over 40 hours and I was not thinking straight. I hope this helps. If you cannot access the magazine, just put in the search engine: IG living, medical gaslighting

This link worked perfectly. Thank you.

Laurie,
Thank you for getting me right to it. I have known people this has happened to. Being our own advocate is important.

Thank you for the link, Laurie. Anyone familiar with Ilana Jacqueline or her new book mentioned in the article?

in reply to @katgob I keep hoping, but so far no luck. It is presently 0121. I have done three workouts using my new Apple Watch, folded all my laundry and almost finished an art project...was going to get the iron out, but I finally broke down and took something to help me relax, but I have so much on my mind that it almost feels impossible. At the very least I was able to get the link to you corrected. The IG Living Magazine really is free, and I would recommend getting a print subscription, as I have learned about so many things from the articles. Just mark that you have a "friend" with PI if you need to note why you want the subscription. They have articles on everything, not just IVIG and immune disorders. Take care
