Are hearing aides dangerous during lightning?
This was one of 1st questions I asked while getting my new hearing aides. I live in the lightening capital, Florida. I only have them for 6 weeks, but if I'm out running errands and it starts lightening, I'll remove them. I wonder if I should take them off while indoors too?? I'm searching online, and everything says, anything that conducts electronic, having batteries or metal, is unsafe. Any thoughts on this...do you remove your aides at all times during lightening??

Hello. I dont wear hearing aids but if outside when storm/thunder/lightening I would take them off my head. But have many people been struck by lightening indoors? Until you find out I would take them out as a pecaution, also sometimes thunder close by can be quite loud and may be made even louder with hearing aids? Be interesting to read more comments on here...good question!
(Before we met and my spouse living at home with parents as a young man went to the local pub for a drink...there was a storm and lightening hit the metal clothes line outside attached to the house and the wires going into the house and the lightening went across the bed and burned the mattress a bit - not sure if metal bed frame or metal springs? .. parents threw out the mattress etc. and spouse still can tell the story of how going for a beer saved his life! True story! His parents have passed now but I would have asked them about the metal bed frame and/or springs as my adjustable bed is on a metal frame and I don't go to the pub or drink beer!!! 🙂
That is an interesting question. I've never thought about this, but I've removed my hearing devices when I've been caught in the rain.
I look forward to hearing more.
I have lived in Florida for 30 years and have worn 2 hearing aids for 40 plus years. I never took them out for lightening. If I get caught in the many sudden thunderstorms that pop up without a hat or umbrella, I will either cover my ears with my hands or remove them...depends on how far I am walking. But if they do get wet I'll put them in my dryer.
I don't intend to remove them in the future if lightening strikes and we get a lot of dry lightening too when the sun is shining.
The only place I exercise extreme caution is on the beach and that's mainly for blowing sand...or on a boat.
When we hear thunder we Florida folk skeddadel somewhere safe.

.... first of all , lucky you for living in Florida - we have only been there twice on vacation and loved it... Fort Myers area... I am in northern Ontario and really not a lot of storms but plenty of snow ! Am wondering if this question could be answered by the company making the hearing aids? I did read on some sites that any metal on heat should be removed if outside - not sure what else made of metal that means ... eyeglasses too? Never thought of it before. And people still stand under a tree in a storm!
I'll be removing them in storms. I also have an extra carrying case to take when I'm out. There was one day, I taking my mother shopping and it started to lightening, so I took them out.
@imallears , I won't take a chance wearing mine at the beach...just too hot and sweaty, super humid.
BTW, I like your user name.
A wasp once stung me on my hearing aid ear. Just now Googled and found this:

@ltecato , wow, that's crazy. Very interesting. So strange, because today while I was outside my front yard, a yellow jack bee kept coming around me. I just figured they're around this time of year, but I actually had to swing at it, and I brought my grandson inside as he was right next to me. Happened again as soon as I went back out. My aides fit snug, no feedback...not that I pick up. I'll pay attention if this happens again.
...spouse does not wear hearing aid but seems wasps and hornets etc. like to sly around him sitting outside in summer... or could it be his glass of wine? not joking.... could it also be from aftershave or such? he has been stung many times over the years as we live in a town of lakes and trees but one day at daughters unrolling some tarp got stung once, next day back to finish and stung once but this time had a reaction - probably a wasp - and ended up in emerge and now has an Epi pen! odd after quite a few stings over the years for that to happen... very interesting about the hearing aid connection!
