Anyone tried Accelera SR 100 device? Or Walkasins?

Posted by domiha @domiha, Feb 11, 2024

I have small fiber PN and problems with gait and balance as a result. I recently happened across a Web site with info about Walkasins. I'm just wondering if anyone here has tried this and what results they had? I then came across another device called the Accelera SR 100 that is supposed to help improve balance. ( https://accelera.us/). Again, just wondering if anyone has tried THIS device, perhaps.... and if so, what results you got? I continue to search for some sort of solution for my balance issues related to the PN. Best to all! Mike

Theres another similar product called Walkasins. And then there is also a smart sock for sensory symptoms. I dont know how that sock works though? Do you buy multiple pairs, I mean one pair of socks for the whole year? https://www.mynerva.com/

But with tech today it makes sense to have devices that connect to a smartphone. If they work that is. If these dont there will be devices that do at some point I believe. Kind of like CGMs and Neuralink.

Unfortunately Ive come to the realization my balance is bad due to deformed toes and arches from damaged motor nerves so these devices wouldnt help me but still cool ideas.

Update on my story with Walkasins. My doctor filled out all the information for the prescription for them. RxFunction sent the prescription through my insurance and the Walkasins were denied. (The local rep DID bring a pair for me to slip into my shoes to just "try them" and the immediate change in balance was amazing.) Along with the insurance denial came the possibility of an appeal. I did the paperwork for the appeal and filed that a couple of months ago. Just this week I received a second denial. At this point, one of the reps from RxFunction said that they will be happy to represent me for an in-person appeal before a judge who is entirely independent of insurance/medicare. My insurance is a Medicare Advantage plan, Anthem, through BCBS. So that will be the next step. I did price the Walkasins if I purchased out of pocket and they are $10k. And there is only a two-year warranty. I can't afford that. Plus, the insoles portion of the device has to be replaced each year at a cost of $850. Anyone who has benefits from the VA can get the Walkasins IMMEDIATELY if they are prescribed. So IF you are a veteran and having balance issues, you should contact your doctors through VA and ask about Walkasins. On my end, I am still waiting to see if there is ANY chance my insurance my help pay for them. I haven't pursued much more with the Accelera as I saw somewhere that someone posted they had ordered them and never received and were having trouble with the company. That may be only one isolated incident, but it gave me cause for pause. Also, I have an implanted Loop Recorder that checks my heart daily to see if there are any episodes of AFib, and I can no longer use TENS units anywhere on my body because of the Loop Recorder. I'm not familiar enough with Accelera to know if it emits any sort of electrical charge.... or if, like the Walkasins, it is merely vibration. I need to investigate more. Best to all! Mike

I have just purchased the Accelera devices (the purchase price is for a pair.) My reason for wanting to try them is to see if they will help my symptoms from Mal de DeBarquement Syndrome. MdDS is a condition that I contracted from cruising that makes me feel like I’m always on a boat. I don’t have vertigo, I’m just bouncing around as though I’m on the water. It’s like walking on a trampoline, though I’m always bobbing and bouncing whether sitting or in bed. And there’s no medical help in view.

I’ve only been able to try the Accelera devices for a few hours a day. While they haven’t stopped the bouncing, I do feel more stable trying to walk when wearing them. I can actually turn around without feeling like a “wave” has just hit me, causing me to lose my balance.

But the major drawbacks to the devices are the short battery life before needing to charge and the App required to use the devices. The devices must be connected via Bluetooth and only work as long as you keep your phone near them.

The App will ask to scan for every Bluetooth device you use before it will allow you to connect it to your phone. Then, even if you put the devices on “pause,” as long as they are connected to Bluetooth the battery will run down. Not only that, once you connect them to Bluetooth, you can’t disconnect them without turning off Bluetooth for everything!

It’s either the worst App developed for a medical device or the best App developed to tap into a user’s personal data.
