Anyone on ADT taking anti-depressants?
I have metastatic prostate cancer and am on ADT drugs (abiraterone and prednisone daily) and a shot of something (can't find name) every six months I think. I lost a dear pet recently and have been some depressions. Some friends suggested an anti-depressant. I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks ~Wayne

Common drugs for depression and anxiety
Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Effexor, Buspirone, Cymbalta, Lexipro,
A psychiatrist normally needs to prescribe it for you.
Getting a lot of exercise can take away those feelings. Many people feel that really doing a good amount of exercise can change your mood considerably.

1 ReactionAlthough we are all individuals and react differently, common drugs for depression and anxiety can cause loss of libido, ED and anorgasmia (the inability to have an orgasm). There are a number of other side effects that you may want to be aware of depending on which drug. The side effects of exercise are bone and muscle growth and strengthening, looking and feeling better, a more positive attitude and cardiovascular health.

1 ReactionNo, I don't have experience with antidepressants. However my GU oncologist prescribed for me Venloxafin to help moderate ADT symptoms. I'm currently on Orgovyx for ADT. I have not started the Venloxafin yet, because I feel my ADT symptoms are manageable so far. I'm curious if others found benefits from antidepressants.
Hey Wayne, long term ADT can certainly predispose one to depression and negative thoughts, so anti - depressants might help.
But add the loss of a beloved pet to the mix and that’s the absolute worst! I lost the Maine Coon love of my life almost 3 yrs ago and I still tear up at his memory.
He was a true living gift who made my life so much better with his presence; when we lost him I cried ( I mean the full blown ugly stuff with snot and hiccups) for months, couldn’t sleep…it was horrible.
The only way out of the funk was to get another kitten; not a replacement for the irreplaceable, but another vital spark of life which needed to be cared for, nurtured and loved.
It’s not a betrayal of your devotion to your beloved departed pet if you get another; many people seem to feel this way but I’ve come to learn that if you gave your pet the best life he/she could have had, then no regrets are necessary.
It might be time for you to bestow your love on another animal who is out there looking for a place to call home…Best

I know many people that took antidepressants for short period of time, just to get over extra hard periods in their lives. It worked for them great.
There are many different anti depressants with different side effects and maybe you can ask for one that is very mild like Prozac or Celexa.
I really feel for you : (((. This is very reason why I do not have pets - I would just fall apart if anything happen to them. I cried for 5 days because "my" favorite hummingbird died after hitting my window : (((. I burred him in beautiful wooden carved box on top of sunny hill "so he has nice view". Gosh darn, now I am crying again ... NO PETS FOR ME !!!
@ddavid
I was prescribed venlaxafine to help side effects of ADT, especially the severe hot flashes I get, but stopped after a few weeks because the side effects from venlaxafine were bad in my case. I think my moods were getting worse, I was actually sweating more, etc., etc.
If you look up side effects of venlaxafine it includes hot flashes! However, the dosage they give you for ADT symptoms is a fraction of the dosage given for depression. If you can deal without it, maybe let it sit in the medicine chest in case things get worse. If you do take it, you can always stop like I did, just be sure to ask the doc if you need to wean off of it slowly.
I tend to avoid medication if it is just targeting symptoms, but sometimes it can help. Venlaxafine must work for some people, just not me.
Best of luck on your journey.
