Hi, do you mean cramping when you stretch like a Charlie horse? I get that on my left leg if I stretch in the middle of the night. I’ve had fusions, L4-S1, pain was always worse on left. I get cramps now in left foot too, from stretching exercises. I’m working on PT for my neck pain. Trying to keep from having surgery on that!

Hi, no not cramping. This is just the regular stretching we do after a long road trip or waking up in the morning. One doctor thinks its just from tight muscles. it started out of nowhere but it was so bad at one point it caused a tear in one of the tendons of my foot.

I'm not quite sure I understand. The only thing that would tear a muscle, tendon, is involuntary and severe cramping. Stretching is a voluntary action almost always. It is possible to stretch too far and strain and in rare cases tear a muscle or tendon/ligament. You refer to stretching in your sleeping that's what I'm trying to understand.

I'm in very good shape for a 70 y/o, and I will get very bad hamstring cramps when I'm in bed. But those are involuntary.

All the best.

I get horrible Charlie horses in my calves at night, sometimes, particularly when I'm doing LOTS of walking during the day and not stretching. I know one of the main causes of night cramps is dehydration. Make sure you stay hydrated! I"m terrible at remembering this, and many of us over 60 are not getting enough water.

Thanks, is not a charlie horse at all. Its called pandiculation the act of involuntarily stretching and yawning when waking up or being sedentary for a long time except mine went overboard. i stay well hydrated

I used to have a lot of leg and foot cramps. Taking calcium, vit D and magnesium have seemed to help.
