Will you be caring for your son as he recovers?

June 26' I had anterior & posterior neck surgery. Had to wear a neck brace for a little while for support. It was great. Healing was great. I'm 71 yrs old.
I don't know how old your son is but, I think it will be just fine. Not much pain either.

Yes, I have had a 3 level cervical fusion many years ago. Probably about 20. It was well worth it and not a hard surgery to recover from. Minimal pain. The only thing your doctor might suggest is to sleep in a lazy boy recliner of some type to minimize swelling for about 2 weeks. I found this difficult because Im not one to sleep in that position, but I got through it. I was working at the time and I think I went back to work within 3 weeks. Best wishes.

I am 73 YO, had triple cervical fusion C4-7 last year. Anterior then posterior when there was hardware failure. Posterior caused a lot of pain in shoulders from the muscles being cut. But I healed well, followed Dr. directions. I wore a collar for 3 months, no PT until the collar was off. Slow and gentle recovery, no bending!! That still applies, BTW.
Your son is much younger I imagine so that’s to his benefit. Everyone heals differently. My Dr. says it can take 1-2 years to fully fuse.

I am scheduled for ACDF C4-7 this coming Friday. I am very nervous! I wish your son the best in his surgery and recovery.

I had a 4 level disc replacement and fusion (c4-7&l 1)almost 20 years ago, I am 89. The only long term inconvenience is not being to look up for more than 2 minutes, like finding birds in a tree without some pain also unable to have my hair washed at a salon sink. The pressure on the back of my neck is unbearable. I’m glad I had it done; your son will do well after recovery from the surgery.

I've had 2 spinal fusion procedures done in my neck a few years ago when I was in my late 50's. The first one was at the C5-C6 level, they went in through my throat and used a piece of donor bone, along with a plate and screws. The recovery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, just a few days wearing a soft neck collar, but I wasn't allowed to drive for a few weeks though, which didn't exactly thrill me. Then, about 18 months later my symptoms began to reappear, and I had the second surgery at the C7-T1 level. Same thing, they went in through my throat and used bone and a plate and screws to fuse the joint. Same recovery as before this time.

@ga29 yes. That bending can be very tough and makes me stiff.

Ive had 4 level of cervical spine 2 yrs ago, from drunk driver! Your son should do fine! Not a big pain issue, at all. They used Sea Coral, which fuses to human bone, and a couple plates. I had to wear a special collar, which sent a type of frequency to inhibit the coral to grow or fuse to bone. Very interesting! It was through front of neck, very small scar almost invisible now. After this hard collar for 3 months, I went to soft collar and PT. Of course, after fusion, the neck won't look all the way up or down, but I'm so happy I did it. Minimal pain, really! Do or do not, as told, and with a little patience your son will be so happy. Good luck Son. Mama, you take care, too!! 🙏💞
