Anyone had cancer return while taking hormone therapy meds?

Has anyone had their BC return even though they are taking Tamoxifen or an A1?

Yes. I was on Letrazole them Anastrozole for 5 years. My cancer returned last July. Mets to liver. Had an ablation. Now on Faslodex and Ribociclib.
Ricociclib has caused neutropenia. My schedule changed to 3 weeks on 2 weeks off.

I’m sorry to hear this!
How was the new cancer discovered?
Did you have any symptoms?

My CA 27.29 antigen was rapidly increasing. No symptoms. I had CT of abdomen and chest along with bone scan. The CT show a liver lesion. I then had a MRI of abdomen and a liver biopsy. The cancer was in Segment 7 of the liver. I underwent an ablation and am now 1 year out and scans look good.
My oncologist is also following Signatera lab. It is positive for circulating tumor DNA. At this time she is monitoring q3 months to see if it is rising or falling.

How long in between was it from your first cancer to when you found the new cancer?

I was first diagnosed in 2003 with DCIS and had a double mastectomy ( my choice) followed by a Tram flap reconstruction and my oncologist said That I didn’t need chemo or radiation and was released. Exactly 20 years after my first cancer I went to Dr after having pain in my left breast and was diagnosed with cancer again. They did a study and it wasn’t the same cancer reoccurrence, they believe it was in the skin flap from my abdominal muscle they used for reconstruction and excess estrogen caused second cancer.

I'm so sorry to hear this and hope your team has a plan to attack! Were you on any anti estrogen meds after your surgery? They now believe many of us post menopausal cancer survivors will need to take AI's for 10 years.

@hikerlou I am 10 years out from a nasty grade 3 cancer with LVI, but no chemo according to the Oncotype. After my 5 years of letrozole my oncologist no longer sees me even though risk goes up with hormonal cancers. My oncologist does not do the cancer marker blood tests and Signatera is used only after stage 4 is diagnosed.

With 7 spinal osteoporotic fractures, cervical and lumbar stenosis, scoliosis, and osteoarthritis, of course I have pain so how am I supposed to tell if cancer has spread. Some of mine was lobular which is hard to image. I have no breasts to scan.

I had a double mastectomy so there hasn't been a cancer in the same spot. My 2nd diagnosis was breast cancer metastasized to the bones. Breast cancer can spread to other parts of the body and be the same cancer as the original diagnosis - it's not always a secondary cancer. For example, the cancer that is in my bones is the original breast cancer that I had, not a bone cancer, just cancer spread to the bones. That same cancer has the possibility of spreading to there parts of my body, such as the lungs, liver, etc but wouldn't be labeled as lung cancer or liver cancer; it would still be breast cancer that had spread. That's not to say different kinds of cancer can't develop in other areas. I hope this helps.

Dear would you please tell me what was the cure for the bone metastasis ? Is it curable ?

Hi, I have an awesome God who is taking care of me! He is my healer! I chose not to take the anti estrogen pills and am doing it holistic. I am taking DIM that an experienced man at the health food store said a large number of women take this for decreasing estrogen. I researched it after he told me that. Everyone has the right to their own way to heal.

I’m with ya! Dana Farber does not really advocate ctDNA liquid biopsy or full body MRI but this 5 yr mark seems to be critical and a time when we need enhanced surveillance as early detection is all we have. Perhaps ask your onco to write approval for the Natera (sp?) blood test to compare to tumor?? I too have lobular and very dense breasts!
