Anyone else 2 weeks out for THR, left in my case? How are you doing?
I am 82 yr/o female with THR on 12/9/25. I am surviving home alone. I am enervated with double blood thinners following a blood clot. My friend is keeping my female pups:
*4 yr old Maltese Mix 8 lbs full of energy and scratches/ pierces my legs and arm with her too long nails. I am on double blood thinners following a blood clot.
*14 yr old Maltese Mix 10 lbs wants to sleep and needs eye drops ]plus wait 5 minlutes and then add gell to eye] 3x per day requiring me to pick her up, put her in kitchen sink for her to be stable enough to also clean her eye.
My friend is bringing them back tomorrow without discussion or a heads up. I am in disbelief at the sudden announcement just now without collaborations. I did call my Assistant to Surgeon contact. He said "not a clear yes, not a clear no" and referred me to OT, PC who were here yesterday, and won't be back until Fri.
I am walking well to my amazement. Sometimes floating, often nausiated [even with anti-nausea pill] after meds. Very constipated starting before surgery and with 1 movement in 2 weeks! A 2nd bowel movement yesterday after 4 cafergot on top of prescribed softeners and stimulants taken daily since surgery! How have you solved constipation problem?
So how are you doing? Overall?

I, age 79, am not just two weeks out from hip replacement but I had one for which I was in hospital for ten days after. I am on prednisone for an auto immune disease and they had to give me IV steroids after surgery due to adrenal insufficiency. Yes constipation was a problem for me after all four of my joint replacements. They gave me lots of anti-constipation pills in the hospital and all was fine until it wasn't. I asked for a dose of Miralaxx and that did the trick. I now take Miralaxx as needed and eat 5 prunes each morning. I am on a narcotic for back pain and it works for me. I have been told you can take multiple doses of Miralaxx per day with no harm. My hip is wonderful that was replaced and I hope yours turns out pain free. Best wishes.
I was taking Miralax with so so results BEFORE surgery. I went home to a friends home after out-patient THR and then to hospital by ambusence with 220 BP, profuse sweatting and vomiting. In hospital test said both bladder and bowels were back up/ stopped. I am atg my own home alone now taking
30 ml twice a day of lactulose 10GM/15ml
Stimulant (Sennakott I am told) 8.6-50mg TAB RUG
And adding 2 duculax pm (in hopes of having a movement) and 2 more Ducolase next noon with limited results.
I feellike I will blow up soon!.
Anyoneelse loosing the constipation battle?
Anyoneelse home alone?
Are you able to do everything taking care of yourself? I need a THR but need a clearance from my rheumatologist.
Take care.
@robcfl please don't wait too long before letting the doctor know the meds aren't working. A friend had shoulder surgery and became constipated due to the pain medicine and ended up in the hospital for constipation (nausea, vomitting). The hospital took minimal measures to clear the blockage, and her bowels ruptured. She had semergency surgery to repair the break and clean her abdomen, but became septic and almost died. She has had multiple surgeries since including having a colostomy and eventually a reversal. I sincerely hope you have success soon in clearing your bowels and have no further issues.
