Any suggestions to help with blood bruising on arms?
I’ve developed a pretty severe problem with blood bruises on my arms.
It started about 18 months ago and hasn’t stopped with diligent healing lotions, sunscreens, bruising creams, etc.
I recently saw a dermatologist who did a biopsy with negative results. He recommended continuing my regimen of lotion and sunscreen. I was disappointed he couldn’t help me more, but maybe there isn’t more he could do? A few months ago at an annual checkup I had comprehensive blood tests done and everything looks good. I’m not taking blood thinners or anything that would cause my capillaries to break so easily.
It’s so severe that I can tap my arm on something and it leaves a mark. My dog recently (accidentally) kicked her back legs off my upper arm and tore the top layers of skin off which left bad cuts and bruising from my forearm to my shoulder. I ended up at urgent care after it became infected and then 7 days on antibiotics. It’s healing but takes so long.
I’m dedicated to putting quality lotions and creams on my arms and I wear sunscreen when outside. I purchased sleeves to wear when outside working on my yard. I try to avoid the sun whenever I can.
I spent plenty of time in the sun growing up. I loved water sports and live close to the beach. But for the past 25 years my exposure has been limited. It seems this issue came on after I stopped taking pain medications and started using ibuprofen for pain. Recently, after reading that ibuprofen can thin the blood, I switched to acetaminophen. I haven’t seen any change yet.
Just last night I pushed a chair in at a dinner table and the top of my hand tapped the underside of the table, I now have a blood bruise across the top of my right hand. It seems like every day I have a new bruise.
I feel like my life is limited to avoiding the sun and hiding my beat up arms! Summer is here and I’d love nothing more than to be able to go outside in short sleeves and enjoy the day without getting stares at my horribly bruised arms! I know this is common with old age. I’m 65 and feel like I’m too young for the severity of bruising.
Is there anything that has helped anyone with this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I’m not sure a topical is really what I need but I’ll try this. The citrus bioflavonoids are an oral supplement, not a topical. I feel like it’s a body thing not so much a topical one? But it can’t hurt! .
Hi. Am so sorry this is happening to you. My husband has the same problem but he is on blood thinners and that partially explains it. Still can’t figure out where the bruises come from though. Do you happen to take daily baby aspirin? That will do it, too.

1 ReactionIt happens due to 1) sun damage, 2) as we age, capillaries become more fragile, 3) skin becomes for fragile as the rate of old cell turnover to new cell generation decreases with the decades, 4) some older people are put on blood thinners, which cause easy bleeding when we bump, even gently, or scrape even gently the skin surface of sun/exposure to elements skin on our bodies.
One area you can help yourself, is to not allow a health provider draw blood twice in the same area. In addition, when they DO draw blood on your arms or hands, be SURE to apply pretty firm pressure and raise the arm or hand. Also, when you do notice you have bumped or scraped your sun damaged and exposed skin immediately press firmly on the area and elevate, for two to five minutes. This will help prevent those fragile capillaries from seeping for too long, which causes the large, visible blood pools under the surface of your hands and arms, and lower legs, feet.
Anywhere you have a regular tan, or exposed skin on a regular basis is where you need to apply pressure and raise the area above the heart.

1 ReactionI’m not on anything that would thin my blood. I even switched from ibuprofen to acetaminophen because ibuprofen thins the blood more. I’m trying different things and doing my best to take care of my skin! From what I’ve gathered from comments here (and my Dr.) there is no one time fix! I simply do the best I can to stay away from bruising my arms especially. But as most of us know who deal with this, that’s asking a lot when even a light tap leaves a mark!
I read somewhere here that bioflavonoids help but don’t recall if citrus is necessary. That would be good to know, if anyone reading this happens to know if citrus is necessarily best. I went online and looked at bioflavonoids, haven’t done a deep dive on which is best but I’m willing to try them if they’re helping! It’s always a challenge to find the right one and a company selling them that is reputable!
I can say me too. The sleeve idea sounds great. Maybe cut the sleaves from an old sweat shirt or parka for more padding. Sounds like you are very active-keep it up! I do a lot of lifting, pokeing,bumping into things and arms and legs look pretty bad. If I bleed, neosporin and a bandaid. Otherwise they eventually go away and I make new ones. In a way they are badges of movement and action. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

Yes, bioflavonoids take time to work and they are not 100% successful but they work enough for me to use them daily and this definitely minimizes the extent of bruising. Try the baby oil immediately-- carry it around with you if you are constantly bruising, make you use enough to make sure your skin is wet. Until I found this remedy, I was bruising my whole life-- it is not just aging, it is also genetics.

I used to bruise a lot-- just seems to be part of my genetics and of course, worse as you get older. I found a solution that works for me that I share with everyone. For long term to prevent bruising, I take 1000 mg of bioflavonoids (recommended to me by a health food specialist)-- just good for your body overall (contains rosehips). Take 1 or 2 a day and in a couple of months, you should see bruising diminish. For immediate prevention, I do what my grandmother told me to do decades ago-- wet the bruise area with baby oil. This must be done really quickly-- like within 3-4 minutes. It completely stops the bruising most of the time for me. I always have a little bottle on hand. I know everyone is different but these are really simple solutions to a problem that plagues a lot of people, so I like to share my solution. You can find Bioflavonoids on Amazon etc. -- you just have to remember that like other supplements, they will take some weeks to work.

2 ReactionsHubby has been faithfully using the Helichrysum essential oil for about a month and his arms look so much better! The skin is now smooth and soft and when he does bump his arm and gets a bruise, the healing time is so much quicker. I use fractionated coconut oil as the carrier and here's the formula that was taken from their website:
"A common ratio for diluting Helichrysum essential oil in fractionated coconut oil is a 2-3% dilution, according to Nomad Botanicals. This means you would use 2-3 drops of Helichrysum essential oil for every teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil, or 12-18 drops per ounce of carrier oil, according to Eden Botanicals.
More Details:
1% Dilution:
For sensitive skin or when starting, you can use a 1% dilution, which is about 6 drops per ounce of carrier oil, says Wyndmere Naturals.
2-3% Dilution:
This is a general guideline for most adults and is a safe and effective dilution for topical application."
