Any suggestions for pain relief other than meds?
After 3 years of dealing with pain in both feet, EMG tests, muscle tests. 2 neurologists, I have no answers to symptoms. Going for MRI. Anyone have ideas that have helped you cope?

MRI sounds like a good start. You are lucky to get one - but be prepared for the noise emitted by thar machine! Hope they provide you with noise cancelling earphones!
Have you ever taken one of those genetic DNA blood tests? Apparently they give one a lot of information on what you are predisposed to. I haven’t taken one because here you need a doctor’s referral even though it is not covered by our health plan - because my doctor doesn’t think it is necessary. 🤷🏼♀️
I've asked for an "open" MRI . They're not as noisy and they're larger. It may take longer for appt.
Interesting suggestion about DNA.
What medications (other than for pain) are you taking, and what health conditions do you have? Exploring these could lead to an answer if it is not neuropathy.
Thank you.
my only condition is high blood pressure. Anxiety issues. My PCP ruled out my meds as a cause.
I tried gab and Lyrica, no help.
What can you share about idiopathic neuropathy? What do people do for relief other than meds?
dorethalorraine, Bless you.
When my B12 gets low, I have symptoms of peripheral neuropathy especially at night. I'm going to see my primary doctor this week as my pain has ramped up again in my arms, hands, legs & feet when I lie down at night. I have not able to sleep well.
I will have a fasting glucose done, A1C to rule out Diabetes and my B12 levels and possibly my D3 checked. I do take a B12 supplement daily and get B12 injections.
This helps me greatly:
1) Soak in an Epsom Salt bath in the tub.
2) I put 1 Bed Buddy heat pack over each foot (Amazon has these). Don't get them too hot. I do 2 minutes in the microwave and put a towel over each heat pack.
3) I cannot take Advil or Motrin (NSAIDS), BUT, I can tolerate Voltaren Gel (Arthritis Gel) which is now sold over the counter. This is considered an NSAID gel. I have never had a reaction to it and it works much better for me than the other pain creams. I use it up to 4 times a day if needed per my doctor's recommendation.
Ask your doctor about all of these please before you try.
4) Standing for a long period of time makes my legs and feet pain worse.
5) Elevate your feet and legs when you sit down.
6) If you fly, wear support stockings.
7) Also, Plantars Fasciitis in your feet can cause them to hurt terribly. This goes and comes for me.
8) You may need to see a Podatrist or an Orthopedic doctor.
9) Get some really good support shoes. No flip flops.
10) If you can tolerate a massage, it helps greatly with foot pain.
11) Do not go bare footed. This makes foot pain worse per my Podiatrist.
Praying for you right now. New Year's Blessings to you....
Thank you for your helpful reply.
I pray for everyone who suffers with chronic pain.
I have bunions so bad on both of my feet. My right foot, however, is so bad that my big toe is bent at about 45°+ over the toe next to it and my baby toe is now bent completely behind the toe next to that. I’m going to have to have my foot reconstructed. There are stress fractures happening all the time too. I’m sharing this with you to let you know that I can relate with pain in your feet on a massive level. I’ve been dealing with this for quite a few years now, and I don’t take any major pain medication as I feel as though that just leads to more problems. At this point, I sometimes take Motrin. And I’ve been on a small dosage of gabapentin for the nerve pain for a few years now as well. Of course these things only do so much and I find, for me, a lot of things are mind over matter. It takes a while to get to that point though. I also have pretty bad scoliosis. My left lower back is bent at a 63° angle and so chronic pain is a part of my daily life. And mind over matter, for me, is basically just living my life and not focusing on the pain. I try to put it out of my mind by doing other things. I’m not going to lie, there are days that are worse than others, but even on those days I just keep moving. I find that if I stop doing things, that is when I am in the most pain. That is when my mind begins filling with the pain signals. I never thought I’d be able to get past the pain by just keeping my mind busy and occupied, but it is really an amazing thing, your brain. We possess so much more strength than I could’ve ever imagined. So my advice to you is to keep busy, keep living your life, and really try not to focus on your pain. I know it sounds easier said than done and it definitely takes some practice, but I promise you it works. Good luck! And I’ll pray for you and for you to start feeling better soon. Remember, you’re stronger than you’ll ever know!
Fantastic ideas!! And God bless!!
@neesie33177, Bless you dear lady. My sister had the bunionectonmy done a couple years ago and did great...hers was not as extensive as yours. What pain you have endured.
Praying for this surgery to be successful right now and for your other pain to get much needed relief.
Happy New Year blessings to you.
