Any problems tolerating certain foods/drinks months post surgery?

Posted by susan7656 @susan7656, Jan 10 8:24am

I had a bilateral mastectomy and 4 lymph nodes removed in October 2024. I have tissue expanders until my implant surgery next month. No chemo or radiation.

Since surgery, I’ve had frequent problems with coffee (regular and decaf) often leading to nausea and sometimes vomiting. However, I can tolerate iced tea with caffeine just fine.

Was curious if anyone had a similar experience?

After much research, I did find a post-op pdf from a hospital about coffee components sometimes causing inflammation if you’ve had lymph nodes removed.

I also have psoriatic arthritis, an autoimmune condition, which causes inflammation. And I have not been able to take my biologic since September.

Thanks to all who consider this question.

@susan7656 I never linked surgery and lymph nodes removal with tolerance for coffee. I had lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. I used to drink espresso con pana without problem. Now coffee gives me headache. I mostly drink tea now. I thought maybe my body was getting old and the stress of constant worry about cancer affected my tolerance for caffeine. There maybe some link there! I only drink decaf coffee occasionally now.

@myoga Thanks for responding. It’s interesting that maybe coffee components may be the culprit. Because I’ve had these bouts of nausea and vomiting, I drink decaf tea every morning now instead of coffee. I’ve tried various types of coffee (because I love coffee!) but just haven’t been able to consistently tolerate it. I was pleased that I could tolerate regular iced tea in the morning without feeling sick.

Again, thanks for responding.
