Anal Pain

Posted by thedaleys @thedaleys, Jul 2, 2023

My wife has been diagnosed with an anal fissure that has been causing her excruciating pain for 15 months! Sometimes she is crying from the pain. We have been prescribed various ointments and tried others to no avail. I am at a desperate point right now to help my wife. Botox? I really don't know. Soliciting suggestions.

Hello @thedaleys, Welcome to Connect. Yikes! 15 months is a long time to be suffering with that kind of pain and no relief. While we wait for others with experience to respond to your discussion, I thought it might be helpful to read through the following discussion to see what other members have shared.

--- Anal fissure: What helps it heal?: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/anal-fissure/

Mayo Clinic has some information on treatments here - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anal-fissure/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20351430. Since your wife has had to endure the pain for 15 months, has her doctor offered any other suggestions or surgery?

For almost ANY health problem, I start with asking: Am I taking care of matters that are in my control: Proper nutrition, regular Physical activity, managing stress (with CBT) and having simple easily accessible fun -- plus -- most importantly -- having a general purpose in life that spurs you to be in your best shape so that you could best achieve Your purpose.

Looking at Mayo website, "Anal fissures are very common in young infants but can affect people of any age. Most anal fissures get better with simple treatments, such as increased fiber intake or soaking in a warm-water bath. Some people with anal fissures may need medicine or, occasionally, surgery."

In fact I'd did have years ago this condition which seems to have completely vanished...all I can say is that after retirement I'm able to take even better care of my lifestyle health issue -- starting with whole plant-based foods with lots of seeds, nuts, fruits. You can get detailed info from almost any reliable websites ( universities, CDC etc)

Good luck (I'll opt for pills as my Last Resort)

Hello,
Omg .. I feel for your wife because that is one of the worst things I ever encountered. The pain from an anal fissure is sooo painful. Let me ask, does she do sitz baths? Does she use wipes to wipe with? Does she do squeeze exercises in her anal area to promote blood flow for healing? I also have a cream I used, which is called calmoseptine. This was a life saver. You can order it off the internet. Whenever my daughter or I have a problem back there that's what we use. I did sitz baths whenever I was hurting really bad , especially after having a bowel movement. I hope these suggestions help.

Only 50% of people can heal them on their own. She needs the procedure. They cut the muscle in her rectum.

An inexpensive bidet can be attached under the seat of your toilet. I put mine on myself a few years back. Now I need help, but it is not a big job. It is helpful for all kinds of bowel and rectal problems and just routine cleanliness as we age. Lots are available online.

So..so sorry to hear this! It is one of the most painful things that a human can have. I started with two one inch fissures in 1990 and have been dealing with it ever since. Believe me I have learned a few things. Number one does she have a Gastroenterologist? I have a friend whose doctor sewed hers up and after healing had no more problems. So there’s that. I use Anucort 25 mg suppositories and I put neosporin on them at the tip before inserting. I live in Oklahoma and here a doctor made an ointment called Woodwards Ointment. A compound pharmacy can make it and sell you a tube. It’s magic. Botox will also work I had steroid shots. They put me under with great results. I am so sad about your wife that I want to cry. Please ask me anything. You can also use private message by tapping on a person’s name. God bless.

Thank you so much. I just ordered this cream. This Mayo sight is such a blessing I have learned so much and I share what I have learned. We all have suffered and no longer have to suffer alone. Thank you again.

I’m 76. Had my first bout in 1990 and was immediately under the care of a very good doctor. Exercised 7 days a week two of which I just walked my dog. Ate very well drank 10 glasses of water. It’s just best not to generalize nor dump guilt as people are here because they are suffering in pain. I’m sure most people mean well because we all care deeply for other people.
