CT scan and MRI inconclusive: Perirectal mass?

Posted by alsmail @alsmail, May 29 10:42am

My CT report states I have an ill -defined left perirectal added soft tissue density with apparent mass effect on the adjacent rectum. I went to ER with right flank pain and I thought it was my kidney again, so ER doctor ordered a CT and he said based on the finding I need to see a gastroenterologist. Any helpful information would be appreciated. Can’t get into Gastro doctor until 11 Jul.

I was able to see my Gastroentologist yesterday. Based on the CT scan he has scheduled me for a colonoscopy and pelvic MRI. I'm not getting the colonoscopy until 29 Jul. Would they have gotten me in sooner if they suspect cancer or do they not see any urgency of 4-5 week delay? He did say he would take biopsies if he sees anything.

I was in a situation like this recently and time is always of the essence, do NOT assume that waiting until July 29the is a good sign- nowadays doctors are taking two to three week holidays so if you need to call and ask for an earlier appointment, even insisting on a different doctor if needed and look at alternative options. No one is going to be a better advocate for you than you.

I had them place me on a list if someone cancels. That was earliest out of all the doctors there. I’m a military dependent so I can only go to doctors that take tricare. I was supposed to get my MRI this Tuesday but now he wants MRI with and without contrast now I can’t get MRI until 19 July.

MRI no visualized rectal mass. Correlate with direct visualizationCT stated ill-defined perirectal added soft tissue with density with apparent mass effect on the adjacent rectum, but MRI shows no mass. Having a colonoscopy Monday afternoon.Anyone have something similar and the colonoscopy found something?

My CT scan showed that my colon was clear. My colonoscopy and subsequent surgery discovered a tumor, the size of a baseball that did not show up on the CT scan. I’ve been told it’s because it was in an odd place. No one to my satisfaction has ever explained it.

It's amazing how things can be missed! I was hoping my MRI would give me a definitive answer, but when the radiologist put the statement "correlate with direct visualization" has me like i'm still not out of the woods yet.

Thank you for replying and I hope you are doing well.

@alsmail, have you had an appointment with your doctor in the meantime to review the results of your imaging testing? Any update?

Yes ma'am,

MRI was clear and so was colonoscopy. Doctor said the CT report could have just been mis read or I could have possibly moved.

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town.
