Alternatives to Statins

Hi everyone,
Is there other medications that I can take to replace my statin to treat high cholesterol?

I don't know if this applies to your situation. A friend told me she is eating oatmeal and stopped statins. There are other dietary recommendations (see link below). But again this may not apply so ask your doctor or dietician.

There’s not research/evidence that shows supplements, diet, or exercise are as effective at lowering cholesterol as statins if it’s seriously high, but it can help.

Zetia is a non-statin cholesterol lowering medication. It has a different mechanism of action, but it’s not as potent as a statin if you wanted to ask your doctor about that.

Plant sterols have some evidence (I looked into this for my dad as he is statin intolerant). He tried Pure Encapsulations Cholesto-pure. It’s expensive, and unfortunately he couldn’t tolerate it.

Similar to the oatmeal suggestion, his cardiologist suggested Metamucil as a fiber supplement. But instead he takes a generic brand of Sun Fiber, which he tolerates better.

I just had my morning oatmeal 🙂 I put frozen fruit in it to cool it down.

I take repatha injections every two weeks. My numbers are excellent. I have no side effects which is unusual for me as I have an allergy list a mile long!

I've been using citrus bergamot for over a year with decent results. While it has decreased my bad cholesterol some, it has significantly increased my good cholesterol (according to my doctor). He originally wanted me on a statin or Red Yeast Rice, but I declined because of their effect on neuropathy. I take the citrus bergamot in capsule form first thing in the morning.

@emo Zetia is usually utilized along with a statin when prescribed as it is not a true statin but performs another function for stubborn cholesterol cases.

Oh, I didn’t realize that. My father was prescribed Zetia on its own because of his previous poor reactions to statins so he was only take Zetia for a time. I do recall it was said to not be as effective at lowering the numbers. Thanks!
