Alternatives to standard Osteoporosis drugs

Posted by annie1 @annie1, May 19, 2025

Has anyone tried Calciven and did it increase your bone density as effectively as Evenity or Forteo ? My Dr. doesn't recognize any drugs besides the standard treatments. End of discussion. The other major problem is that Medicare may no cover it.

@naturegirl5 medication did you get on?
I’m 61 and was just diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lumbar spine so kind of freaking out a bit and trying to sift through all of the information on over the counter supplements versus the Prolia shot.
Would really appreciate anyone in my same situation, letting me know what worked for them! Thanks in advance.

@frannie1

Would Prolia be your first osteoporosis medication and if so, what is your providers rationale for starting with it?

It also has Boron which I don't see listed in ingredients in most osteoporosis supplements

You can get boron from prunes.

@frannie1 Tymlos is the best drug for spinal osteoporosis. Forteo is the next best, then Evenity. I have been taking Tymlos for 14 months. After 12 months my bmd for my spine was up 10.4%. I have had no side effects.

thanks — i actually know about each drug — but curious why you think Tymlos is better. It doesn’t have better bone building specs, only different side effects. It doesn’t have to be refrigerated, so that makes it more convenient but doesn’t necessarily make it a better bone building drug. It is easier to step up, but once again that does not necessarily make it better. It’s ok not to answer—I was asking for your perspective.

I agree. This seems to be a group of vitamins that can be helpful to bones. If you are adding these to a treatment plan it probably is best to shop for them individually so you can evaluate their quality. In my opinion, supplements are not a substitute for a comprehensive treatment plan that you discuss with your doctor. So many of us here do our own research in order to advocate for ourselves.
Vitamins cannot do the heavy lifting that an anabolic tymlos, evenity or forteo can. That is my belief.
