Alpha Lipoic to help with incontinence.

Posted by pml @pml, Jul 9, 2022

My incontinence returned after 9 years of a reflux procedure. I can't see my doctor until October. However, I have discovered that 1200 mg. of Alpha Lipoic has helped reduce the urine flow immensely! It has very few side effects. I have taken Alpha Lipoic in the past for leg numbness and it cured that. Has anyone else used Alpha Lipoic for incontenence or any other issue?

Margaret, may ask how much alpha lipoic you had to take to get your peripheral nerve pain under control? Thank you, Johnmacc

So, how much alpha lipoic do you take daily?

The brand I use has 300 mg R-Alpha Lipoic Acid and 300 mg S-Alpha Lipoic Acid = 600 mg er day.
Actually the Dr recommended 800 per day, but I could not find that mg when I started taking it. As it turns out 600 mg has been enough.
Not all of this supplement is the same - I did read up on it first. There are synthetic pills on the market so stay away from those.
As I said I did take it close to 6 weeks when I could feel significant relief. It seems like after 6 months I was virtually pain free. I still take it - the Dr recommended that too.
For me this was a miracle Med. I had been suffering for many years.
I had actually given up on relief - I had serious reactions to Gabapentin - so I will not take that again.
Good luck

Now that I have decided to "live" with my inconinence, does anyone have any suggestions regarding protection? I am currently using 3 nighttime Poise pads during the day. They are quite good. However, if there is something better, I'd like to know about it.
Thanks so much!

What are your daily Mg of the Alpha Lipoic Acid for incontinence?
I also have taken it successfully for nerve pain - that was 600 mg- but it did not help my incontinence at 600 mg daily.
What did u use ?
Thanks
Margaret

Actually the night is much less active than the daytime. There is less leaking simply because I am sleeping and only drinking water when I get up to go to the bathroom which is usually twice a night. I wear only two night time Poise pads. They are very absorbent and soft so not uncomfortable. I'm not displeased with Poise pads but I thought there might be some other type I had not heard of before which could be even better.

Interesting! I'm a bit of the opposite as when sleepy it's harder to get to the bathroom without incident. I use Depends night defense. I have used Poise during the day for years but they really can't catch a major incident so if I am going somewhere I am unsure about the ease of finding a bathroom, the Depends are more comfortable and reliable in place of stacking up multiple Poise in your underwear. Just my experience since you hadn't mentioned Depends.

I have used “depends panties” with adding another heavy duty pad when I thought I would be gone most of the day.
Works fairly well for me

Hi Bonnie!
I will have to try Depends. They sound very reliable! I considered Depends at first when after 9 years my continence returned. However, I already had Poise on hand so I stayed with them. Also, I was able to get them through Amazon with their subscribe and save program and get 15/% off. I will see if I can get that same offer with Depends. It is difficult when you aren't sure of a bathroom being there. My husband and I travel to grocery stores etc. that are close to home, so that helps. I can always stop by home. But doctor appointments are another issue. Thanks again for the suggestion!

Check on the grocery stores because most of them have nice bathrooms these days! 😉 All of my doctors also have bathrooms for patients. I worry more about taking vacations where I don't know what's available. I hate to be so revealing but I often wear Underwear and Poise over a Depends. If I have an accident I can take the Depends off and discard and still have the underwear and poise to slip back on without having to carry a lot of stuff in my purse. Depends Night Defense are likely going to be more expensive than Poise pads but it's worth it when you aren't sure where the next bathroom is. Good luck!
