Alendronate for Osteopenia to Prolia
I have been on Alendronate for five years and need to come off it. I’m 5’ - 108 pounds, 68 years old and live an active lifestyle. My T-scores are still in the osteopenia stage with the lumbar spine score creeping up to -2.3, while the rest are between -1.2 and 1.9 - staying steady. My doctor said taking a medication vacation and starting Prolia in a year with a DEXA in a year instead of two or starting Prolia now would be her suggestion. I know Prolia is a lifetime commitment. Has anyone taken a year off of medication with good results? Thank you!

There is lots of good information here about the importance of sequencing the drugs. I started on these meds a number of years ago and took alendronate for 5 years. The thinking seems to have changed and now seems to suggest an anabolic first.
Thank you. I have read the comments on the anabolic and reading as much as I can. It seems a little overwhelming and thankful I have a little time to wade through it.
That’s an interesting proposal. I, too, was on alendronate for over five years. I was hoping to come off all medication but then I fractured my T8 vertebra.
Since you have not fractured, my guess is that your doctor wants to continue to try to prevent additional bone loss using Prolia.
Fosamax eventually stops all bone metabolism so it sounds the doctor wants to see if you can reestablish bone metabolism during the drug holiday of one year.
As for the next step after one year, I might ask for an anabolic treatment first to see if you can reverse some of the existing bone loss.
