Alcoholic Cirrhosis - Ursodiol
Anyone prescribed ursodiol to reduce bilirubin pre-transplant? Any side-effects?

Good morning from Canada 🇨🇦.
I take ursodiol 2x's per day. I have an autoimmune disease and need to take ursodiol to slow the progression of my disease. I took it prior to my liver transplant and will need to take it for the rest of my life. My personal side-effects were/are nausea, and stomach pain. Everyone is different, my advice is to take the medication exactly as prescribed.
Thanks, @footballmum. I do have an autoimmune disorder (Hashimoto’s), and my doctor indicated that he believes my alcoholic cirrhosis was exacerbated by autoimmune issues, which makes since; however, I thought ursodiol was for primary biliary cirrhosis (autoimmune), and shouldn’t be taken for alcoholic cirrhosis. If I remember correctly, you did not have alcoholic cirrhosis pre-transplant anyway - and it sounds like I may need to be on ursodiol long-term also - I will probe more with my doctor (I thought it was to lower my bilirubin, started looking more into it).
Thanks as always for sharing - you never cease to give pertinent information.
Good afternoon
You are correct I have PBC, not alcohol related cirrhosis. Currently I only take ursodiol and tacrolimus. I will admit I have been very fortunate that I had such a good match. I wish you good luck and feel free to reach out anytime.🤗
