After Evenity, must I stay on other meds?

Posted by callmekate @callmekate, Jan 8 10:51am

I am on shot #6 and my side effects have included itchy like mad for two days a week later, and having my spine sting down its entire length, as if the shower is hitting me too hard. At least, I blame Evenity for those. It seems no one really knows all it can cause.
When I finish my shots, I want to back away from all those meds that hang on to old bone, since it seems there is no way to ever stop those without suffering fractures. I have had 2 compression fractures in my -4.8 spine, which is why I agreed to the Evenity. I have also finally found a doctor, who works with a naturopath, willing to put me back on my BHRT at age 66, even with my heart issues. I have hopes that the combo of Evenity and BHRT will be enough to put me in a better place, going forward with weights and rucking, etc.
Does anyone have experience or suggestions for me?
Also, I have heard the first 9 months of Evenity build, the last three are for retaining old--and the new--bone. Is that true? Maybe I should stop after Month 9....

Many thanks, all!

@oopsiedaisy, I'll confess I didn't believe there was anything wrong with me when they told me I had osteo. I, too, had no idea how horrible this would be. We are done a grave disservice by not being fully informed of all its effects. I only ever heard about losing height and breaking a hip in old age. Older and wiser, I am asking better questions as I struggle with the future. Is it safe to stop Reclast after a year or two? Would that be a safe transition off of the meds?

Evenity is not a bisphosphonate. You will lose anything you gained if you don't follow up with something else. Check out the several bisphosphonates and make your decision. Since I had been on Foxamax before Evenity, I chose Reclast. Feel free to read my post on Reclast.

I have had 10 doses of Evenity, but now have developed high BP and heart problems (undergoing testing now), which I never had before. I am going to tell my endo that I am stopping, but it will be 2 months before I can get in for a DEXA. I have read that bone loss can start immediately, but I need to see what the DEXA says before I know which medication to move to. Does anyone have info on how long one can safely wait between Evenity and the next medication?
Thank you.
