I have stage 3 esophageal cancer. I just finished my 28th treatment of radiation and chemo. I have been able to drink but after my last treatment I'm now unable to drink without pain in my chest. Is the normal

Sorry to hear about your not being able to swallow. I know how it felt. So I had to have a j tube put in had that for 7 months through all my chemo treatments and my surgery. For me it helped tremendously. I had lost 45lbs couldn’t eat and drink a little through a straw. So I made it through with feeding tube had most of my feeding overnight when I was sleeping. Made it easier for me gained 20lbs back before surgery. After surgery I could eat again. Still can only eat small meals because I get full so fast. Just eat more often so I can get my calories and nutrients. So if you have to get a feeding tube it will get you through until you can eat again. Best of luck. Scott.

I just finished the 5 day a week radiation and 1 day chemotherapy. I was unable to even get water down and then at about treatment #22 I was able to drink and eat apples sauce. I was so happy. Then after my last one#28 and the was last tues, if I try to drink anything it just gets stuck and causing unbearable pain in my chest. They say this will get better but I'm very disappointed. Can't really even swallow my saliva and not hurt. Best of luck on this road we are on.

My dad has this same problem after he finished chemo and radiation. Could finally eat, gained a couple pounds and then serious pain when swallowing. Don't worry. It will pass. Takes about 2 weeks but it will. Ask for liquid lidocaine to swallow before eating.

Thanks for your reply,
I’m thinking if I stop radiation
and ask to see a CT scan of
my tumor and it has become
smaller then let’s do surgery and not fry everything in my throat.
What is the difference to a surgeon if your tumor is 7 mm or 8mm but I’m just trying to get the best results without the horrible pain!

Yes... this is seen by many. It will pass... maybe in a week or two... or a month or two.
