Advice about scheduling Colestid

Posted by victoria0619 @victoria0619, 2 days ago

Trying to juggle new Rx of Colestid for bile acid sequestration to help with diarrhea post gallbladder removal. How rigidly do you need to adhere to the schedule (ie, take one hour after other meds, no other meds 4 hours after taking). Advice about managing bloating?

Scheduling Colestid can indeed be tricky when one is on other meds;yes—it must be taken accordingly. here’s what I do; thyroid med first thing in the morning; blood pressure med (an extended release) before dinner around 5:30; 1 Colestid before bed around 10pm. When I was on a second mid-day
dose I did find it cumbersome as I often wasn’t home and the pills are quite large. You can ask your pharmacist for help, scheduling around your other meds. best wishes.

Hi Victoria,

Sorry to hear about your surgery and your troubles trying to acclimate.

The clinical data is very clear - taking colestipol and similar bile acid sequestrants definitely reduces the potency of other medication when taken concurrently. The one hour before / 4 hours after guidelines should be followed as well as humanly possible.

Timing colestipol itself can be tricky and depends on your situation. Some people take one or more pills per meal (for an effective dose of 4g/day or even higher), while others take just one at the end of the day and it seems to work just fine. Others take 1 after just two of their big meals a day, etc.

Remember that colestipol is a "quality of life" drug and you should experiment with it to find what works for you. Bile acid diarrhea is very obvious and identifiable, in my experience, so just start a short journal of when you eat, when you take the medicine, and then if you have any loose and fiery bowel movements in the days after. Good luck!
