Adrenal Insufficiency

Hello everyone I am new to this group but not new to diseases and disorders. I have SO MANY conditions that I have been diagnosed with. I think that my adrenal insufficiency has many faces and I can't seem to find any MD who seems to know what to tell me or how to treat it. Diagnosed in 2009.

@sfccole Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I’m glad you found this site. You were diagnosed in 2009–have you been on any treatments since then? Here is information from Mayo Clinic on adrenal insufficiency/Addison’s Disease.

Hi there- So sorry you’re going through this. @maverickwhites is right about looking for an endocrinologist—I learned they treat adrenal insufficiency.

I’m a caregiver for my father who has PMR (polymyalgia rheumatica), also an autoimmune disorder. Because the first line of treatment for it is long-term use of prednisone, there’s a high risk of developing adrenal insufficiency.

I posted a discussion in the PMR group a few months ago that had replies that might be helpful: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/adrenal-insufficiency-and-tapering-prednisone/, and you might find other members who can relate.

My dad has his endocrinology appointment next week (finally!) We’re not sure if that’s his issue, but we suspect it, which is why he got referred to a specialist.

Have you already been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency, or do you suspect it?

After 3 years on prednisone for PMR I had a low grade fever, achy stomach pain and my face flushed red in the evenings. My rheumatologist said he thought it was adrenal insufficiency and sent me to an endocrinologist who confirmed diagnosis. She said I just had to suffer through it as I tapered down on prednisone. She insisted I wear a medical ID bracelet stating I had adrenal insufficiency. She also prescribed IV steroids during and after two surgeries I have had in the last 9 months. It is a confusing issue. Good luck.

Ohhh, I see. Thank you for sharing. Are you having a hard time finding a new provider? Do you think the medications are helping?

My dad's endocrinology appointment is next Wednesday, and I'm really not sure what to expect. I hope she's nice and willing to look at the whole picture, fingers crossed.
