Acyclovir: Have You Been On It and How Long?

Posted by smiles1951 @smiles1951, Jun 3 8:08am

When I began my treatments (just two shots) in February of 2022, I was prescribed Acyclivir and Bactrim. Consultation with specialist from Mayo Rochester resulted in "You are doing very well. You may discontinue Bactrim and the steroids at time of shots could have been discontinued after nine (9) months. " I had cut them back to just one Acyclivir each day and only took 2-3 steroids and soon cut those back to just one. A week later, Rochester care team told me to continue my one table of Acyclir. This Rx can be hard on your kidneys. Wrote to them explaining my thoughts. I am waiting to see if I've convinced them the benefits of the medication may not be what a person who is relatively healthy other than the Stage 1 Mulitple Myeloma, but had an incident w/one of this patient's kidneys 24 years ago.

@smiles1951 I have been on both acyclovir and bacterium since August 2021, when I started treatment for my multiple myeloma.

200mg twice a day of acyclovir, bactrim [also known as SMZ-TMP] 3 times a week. I have not taken any breaks in doing this treatment. I also am on 12mg once a week of dexamethasone. At this time, my chemo is Revlimid, 21 days on, 7 days off. Again, all of this since August 2021.

I am also a kidney disease patients, on dialysis, unrelated to the mm. What dosage of the acyclovir are you on now? Have you seen any downward trend of our kidney values?

No kidney disease here but way back in 1996 when Mom had Chronic Leukemia, I had three homes to keep up, an office to run, did entertaining for our business, and shows for one of the products we sold. At one of these shows, I became very sick but waited until morning to see a doctor four hours from our home. This doctor wanted to hospitalize me but I convinced him to let me return home because though I had non-working sisters, they would not help our mother. I almost killed a kidney, but fortunately I recovered. (Note: One sister passed away and the other one still only thinks of herself.)
