Actemrya injections
Since being diagnosed 2 years ago with both PMR and Temporal arteritis, I have been taking weekly tocilizumab injections. My depression, including suicidal thoughts have made a presence where otherwise these feelings didn’t exist, at least to the severity being felt. When I called my doctor she said no studies on mood elevation have been done, the benefits outweigh the risks. My PCP put me on 100 mg of sertraline which helped with appetite. Some serious shifts in mood has been felt, really overwhelming, quite arduous on some days just to finish tasks. Am wondering if anyone else has experienced any significant mood shifts resulting from medication? Or is it the disease? Anything that has brought relief?

I was only diagnosed with PMR within the last two months. There's depression from the disease and depression from the prednisone side effects. It's not constant and it's not suicidal depression but I feel like I've lost my former life. I get angry easier. You need to have a serious discussion with your doctor and you should consider counseling to manage your suicidal thoughts. I would also want to get a second opinion. Don't allow any provider on your care team to casually dismiss your feelings, especially the feelings you are having. Try to keep a positive outlook and advocate for yourself relentlessly.

3 ReactionsHi @clendenin I am so sorry to hear that you have been dealing with depression on top of PMR/GCA. That diagnosis alone is a lot to bear but additional depression must feel overwhelming. I was also diagnosed with both about 4 years ago and have been taking both prednisone & Actemra for about the same period. I concur with @kjoed53, I have periodic down days but I do not have persistent depression or suicidal ideation. I have not heard of that side effect but medication affects us all differently so I think you should seek a medical professional to explore the possibilities. I also think you received some very sound advice about seeking additional emotional support and advocating for yourself. If that seems like more than you can handle right now, I pray that you can call on a friend or loved one to be your voice. Obviously, our group has lots of limitations but I am thankful that you used this format to check-in and let others know how you are feeling. Know that I will be sending some warm thoughts and prayers your way. Biggest Blessings! ❤️

This is what I love about this group. We are all strangers to each other, who are here for each other as both a sounding board and a support group. I wish there was a convention of us somewhere so I could give a hug to everyone who has helped me here!
