Newly diagnosed. Extremely frightened. Surgeon says lumpectomy and possible radiation. Awaiting results for HER2. Radiation scares me. I would appreciate any thoughts

I’m glad to hear that your lumpectomy is behind you. It’s very good news that your sentinel nodes were negative. I’m sorry to hear that you have a hematoma. I was told to keep an ice pack on my breast as much as possible. I had 16 rounds of radiation. It is painless and takes less than 15 minutes each time. I had no side effects. It was the easiest part of my treatment. If you decide to have radiation, I truly hope you have the same positive experience.
Sending hugs and best wishes.

Hi All,
I was just diagnosed with IDC stage 2 and I am ER+ PR+ HER2 pending. I am learning so much from all of you. My question to you all is did oncology do all the genetic testing as standard procedure or did you have to request oncotype and BRCA mutations?

Thank you!

My doctor ordered it, I had genetic counseling and testing. If you are concerned about it, you can request it.
Are you wanting to get genetic testing because of familial concerns?

My doctor ordered the genetic testing. I recommend it for all breast cancer patients. I am only the second person in my extended family to have breast cancer. My cousin was first and did not have mutations. I have both the BRCA2 and CHEK2 mutations. My son has both mutations as well. My brother had melanoma so likely had the BRCA2 mutation. Lots of other cancers in my family not thought to be related to these two mutations so maybe we have more unidentified mutations. Best of luck.

I had a genetics specialist called me and interviewed me to see if I should get the testing- I did because my paternal grandmother had breast cancer at age 40. This was prior to my surgery-

Radiation wasn't too bad. I had 15 treatments. A little red and discoloration. Used lotion to keep moist and that helped.

Just diagnosed with IDC stage 2 and I am ER+ PR+ HER2-neg. Genetics labs have been sent. My lumpectomy surgery is scheduled for a week from Tuesday and I will need radiation and hormone blocking meds. This site has been helpful in answering my questions. I am a large woman with small breasts. This is not my primary concern, but does anyone have experience finding a good post-op bra?
