3rd knee replacement in a year and a half on same knee
I had a total knee replacement in May 2023, with pain and swelling and was unstable. Surgeon said I had to have a revised knee surgery 6 months after the first in. He told me that he didn't put the cement in the bone for the implant to be stable. After the second replacement I continue to have pain and swelling he told me that all x-rays looked good. I have been to 6 different rehabs for therapy with no results. 4 weeks ago He said that I needed to have the spacer replaced because he put the smallest one in and it needed to be higher. I am still having pain and swelling. Now I don't know what to do. I am a 65 year old female that was active be for the first knee surgery, now it hurts to stand from a setting position and feels like a tight band around my knee. If you have any information that will help I will greatly appreciate it.

I had a TKR on my right knee on Aug 6. Was better off prior to surgery. Constant pain, knee giving out, swelling, tightness, extreme pain on inner knee and outer knee and behind knee. Surgeon kept saying it was nerve pain. MRI showed grade 2 MCL tear which he denied. Saw two other surgeons in June and they diagnosed me immediately. Loose implant, too much of tibia was removed and implant did not sit snug on femur exposing the back of the implant which was irritated the soft tissue. Many other issues wrong. You are right. It is hard to find someone willing to do a revision and I hate I wasted 1 year in miserable pain. Had my revision done on July 9th. Follow up is in 6 weeks. Hope and pray it is correct this time. Like you I was very active and fit. Couldn’t even tread water due to pain. I hope your issue is resolved

3 ReactionsThe fear is that you are a litigious person and there is still uncertainty in doing a revision so they fear that if something goes wrong you will sue.
I don't know an easy way to solve this conundrum. The only thing I can think of is to go to a surgeon and simply describe your problem in non accusatory terms and that you think you may need a revision If you go to a center of excellence in a different location it might help as they are used to folks coming in for fixes -- places like the Mayo Clinic or the Hospital for Special Surgery.

1 ReactionI’m sorry for your results. I too had a knee joint installed without cement. Just discovered it 12 weeks in. Actually do good but not sure what to do but watch it. Having 2nd opinion tomorrow. Good luck and keep us posted.
Not in your category but 7 surgeries, same knee in 10 years. I cried last time on my way in. Hard to face. But I finally have good results.

3 Reactions@steveinarizona I am 57 and had TKA plus 3 revisions, 4 th surgery was explant to hinged implant, all within 14months. I contacted Mayo, after initial surgeon said my only options is amputation or fusion. We had to wait until now, so it would be 1 year since last surgery. I have the super stretchy ligaments, I guess. I received a letter from orthopedic at Mayo Rochester, that they chose to not take my case. I am left with no options except amputation. I am tired of narcotics. All I am able to do is watch tv. Everyone has opinions like sue the doctors, bla bla bla. I just want another opinion on amputation. Now that is gone.

2 ReactionsSame deal, except 4 surgeries in 14 months. Now amputation……Mayo was interested until the got all my records. All I got was a letter, nothing we can do. I am 57, and at the end of the line. I was very active, not obese, was told my body just loosens with everything they put in there.
@camsheila2001 Don't get me wrong. I was not accusing anyone of being litigious. I was merely reporting that doctors fear that and may choose to avoid the possibility, no matter how remote, by not taking on the patient.
If Mayo turned you down, and you are able to or can afford to travel, try the Hospital for Special Surgery. It is the top orthopedic hospital in the country and it does lots of knee replacements and revisions.
