3 weeks into Covid, elderly, asthma, breathing issues, panic

Posted by dubln @dubln, Feb 5 8:39am

I am 69 years old have had severe seasonal nasal allergies and bronchial asthma since I was 10 years old
Past couple of years asthma better but nasal allergies worse this past summer very bad nothing helps but usually after first frost I feel ok until allergies start again in spring
Not this year stuffy nose sob see pulmonary dr saw ent predisone antibiotics nothing helped 3 weeks ago had crushing pain in my chest went to urgent care for a ekg they sent me to the hospital
Where they did a complete check up of my heart lungs everything fine as I was getting ready to leave 5 hours later the nurses comes in and tells me I have covid I was schocked went home they put me on paxlovid but had to stop mt metoprolol while on it did not agree with me after 3 days had to stop it go back on metoprolol well since then it’s been a nightmare primary pulmonary not always available in person going to different urgent cares because of the same stuffy nose and short of breath I had before covid one pa this at urgent care thinks it’s because I still have a infection or bronchitis that started before covid put me on a antibiotic another urgent care said don’t take the the antibiotic but my pulmonary said take it I got a nebulizer yesterday even though I never used one at home afraid to use it after all this confusion the moral of the story is that I would like to know how many other people are still having stuffy nose or breathing issues and for how long

I use sudafed for a allergy related difficulty in breathing through my nose. It shrinks the nasal passages allowing the sinuses to drain. You have to ask for it from the pharmacist. It isn't on the self.
You situation is much more complex. You might ask one of your physician with and eye to any cardiac issues.

For breathing after COVID no inhalers would work so Drogheda COVID clinic put me on enerzair breezehaler for asthma with in 2 weeks flying around that was 4 years ago..
If I put myself under pressure my breathing goes so I just take my time ... For my sinuses I use Dymista nasal spray ...

dubln, Praying for you. Breathing issues are scary.

I highly recommend for you to go to a Pulmonologist and let them access you. They will probably do a PFT test to see how well your air flow is and how well your lungs are functioning.

I had asthma prior to COVID and then it ramped up with COVID along with bronchitis and double pneumonia.
I was diagnosed with chronic asthma after my first bout of COVID in 2022.

The nebulizer along with Albuterol was wonderful for me 2 summers ago. I used the Albuterol rescue inhaler in between the nebulizer. I had to do this for quite a while. A nebulizer can make you feel a little "shaky" for a bout an hour, but, it really opens up your lung capacity. I actually had to do this off and on the last two weeks with this upper respiratory stuff that's going around this winter (it was not COVID) along with sinusitis, bronchitis & asthma. The doctor may also prescribe another med to use with your nebulizer that has a steroid in it called Budesonide. Albuterol does not have a steroid in it.

The nebulizer is a "rescue net" for me. My breathing is relieved within minutes of using it. It is very easy to use and clean.

Blessings & Prayers......

dubln, I hope this encourages you. COVID shot my heart rate up to 130......doing nothing but sitting or lying down. It made me feel panicky. It took a while before my heart rate came back within normal range. I had a complete workup down with a cardiologist and my heart was fine.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Praying much for you tonight. God Bless You!

I have a long history of chronic sinusitis. It caused me to get bacterial meningitis of my brain 2014. I was seriously ill. I was coded. I use a neilmed sinus rinse with about 1/4 teaspoon white ginger twice daily and as needed. Research - it reduces bacterial and viral load. I had covid in July 2020 and was using this. I was only mildly ill and 2 weeks later I was recovered. I run a levoit hepa filters 24/7. I had 5 years of allergy treatment. In 201t I found out 13 arms of my immune system were done. The testing was done by my allergist immunologist
I also use Flonase. I keep everything cleaned up. Surfaces wiped down. Use a vacuum with bags that are hepa. My home decor is largely things that can be wiped down. What fabric there is gets vacuumed. Since my allergies were largely dust mites I do have 2 dogs short haired who I bathe weekly. Yes. I had to learn to live and clean differently.
