15½-year-old son, bone age 15–16 — more growth possible?
Hello, I’m hoping to connect with other parents who may have gone through something similar.
My son is 15½ years old and currently 5’2½” (158.8 cm). We recently saw a pediatric endocrinologist who performed a bone age X-ray, and his bone age was estimated between 15–16 years. His growth plates are still open, especially at the wrist, but based on his physical development (Adam’s apple, a few chin whiskers , underarm hair, no chest hair ) doctor said he appears to be in the later stages of puberty and may not grow much more. He was 5’1” at age 14 and is now age 15 1/2 at 5’2½. His growth hormone levels are normal so growth hormone is not an option and the doctor said he is healthy overall (thank goodness)
This has been emotionally difficult for him, and as his mom I’m trying to better understand what to realistically expect and how best to support him. I know every child is different, but I was hoping to hear from other parents whose sons had a similar bone age and open growth plates at this age. Did they continue to grow after that? If so, how much and over what period of time?
I am a little over 5”3 and dad is 5’10 for reference
I would really appreciate hearing others’ experiences. Thank you very much.
