13 knee surgeries

Posted by stephie5992166 @stephie5992166, Aug 23, 2022

I had a tkr 2 yrs ago it got infected so 10 days later I was back in surgery for a wash out then was doing ok and dropped a small radio on my knee caused another infection had another wash out I have had 2 stage revisions a few times and more wash outs. They say my body rejects foreign body part back in Nov last year they had put in a spacer it had been there a wk they sent me home was home one day was transferring to bedside commode to bed spacer crumbled I fell all the way to ground took me six hrs to get up my friend checked on me in the morning I told him to call 911 I had fallen in the night and my phone was dead charger wouldn't work had a broken femur plus spacer had crumbled had 3 surgery's between nov- mar they put another spacer where my knee should be put a rod from femur through knee. I changed insur they said they didn't take my new one id have to find a new provider went to two the said my case is cplicated out of their scope and whoever did my surgery really messed it up inside then the last surgeon I seen said I'd either have to be stuck with my leg straight forever or amputate I said no. The whole original plan was for rod to be inserted until it healed and then remove it and put in new hardware and he said last time he saw me it looked better than ever so I don't understand why this last dr said I wasn't a candidate for another tkr. My femur hurts and pops all the time my leg is so stiff and swells alot

I feel terrible for you. I'm not sure what to say except try another surgeon. I usually look for a surgeon in their late 30s, early 40s as they are in the middle of their careers, up to date on new techniques, and have about ten years of surgeries behind them.

I wish you the best.

Hi, @steffie5992166
Welcome to Connect.
I can't imagine all you have been through, I'm so sorry you have had to deal with so much.
At this point I would advise going to a major medical center and finding the best doctor there for knee replacements. I have had friends with problems that were not able to be solved locally who then went to a major medical center and were finally able to get their issues resolved. This sounds like too big an issue to have to live with, you deserve to have it get better.

I hope you are able to get help so that you can finally find relief from your pain.

Thank y'all for ur comments I had been trying to get into a Dr at parkland in Dallas as I'm told they have the best but after u call and activate the referral can be 3 months before they call u so my Dr sent another referral to a Dr in Plano and I have a appt next week he sounds good but sometimes Idk if u can trust the review are they from real patients but anyway I'll let u know how it goes and have a appt with pain management which I'm not a fan of

Even though you aren't a fan of pain management, it's needed at times and sure sounds like you qualify.

Mayo Clinic and The Cleveland Clinic are also outstanding medical facilities with the very best doctors, surgeons, nurses, and on.

Take care of yourself. Ice, elevation, and rest really do work and it's relatively easy to raise your knee above your heart.

Be well and stay strong.

@stephie5992166 I think on medical sites like Vitals the reviews are real but I find that I can only rely on them if there are numerous reviews. If there are only a few it's much less reliable. Even real patients can be biased toward or against a doctor depending on whether or not they felt a rapport with said doctor. One of my doctors has numerous 5 star reviews but one person gave him 1 star because they didn't like the support staff! If that had been the only review or one of very few it would tend to turn a person against that doctor.
