Not all aneurysms are ticking time bombs. I asked my cardiovascular surgeon recently and he said that “I’ve been monitoring your aneurysm for six years and it was 1.7 cm then and it’s still 1.7 cm today “
"The only difference is I’ve been told in your hospital chart that it was torn”.
He said he didn’t see any tears so “I don’t know why they sent you to another hospital for emergency surgery “ As far as I can tell I didn’t see a tear in it and it’s still at 1.7. Case closed I say. I wasn’t a living time bomb and I didn’t know the size of it so I was correct in having questions. My mind was put at ease so if you are told you have one it hurts nobody to ask what the size is whether it’s small or over 5 cm. I have the right as a patient to request the size.
It will probably never grow any longer than 1.7 and now I feel less concerned.
It’s ok to advocate for yourself. I do it all the time with all my doctors and none seem to mind answering my questions.
Am I a walking time bomb? No. But at least I know now.

I need to update my post.
The above post was made in 2024. It is now 2026 and I need to tell you that in 2025 it had grown to 3.7cm. It is now 3.9 cm so it is moving somewhat although it’s below 5.5cm.
Cat scans show the tear as evidenced in the past couple of cat scans in the hospital for something else.
However my cardiovascular surgeon says that he doesn’t see a tear in his echocardiogram. The first hospital scan found the torn aneurysm.
They were so concerned that they packed me up and immediately ambulanced me to another hospital ( a trauma hospital). There they found the torn aneurysm but decided that since it wasn’t bleeding we could wait until it grew bigger.
They said that I would eventually need to return but not now. It was also 3.9.
To me a 3.9 aortic aneurysm with a (small ?) tear in it in my aorta bugs me as I am also on blood thinners with an aortic mechanical heart valve .
My blood is thin to facilitate my mechanical aortic heart valve but what about mixing thin blood with a torn 3.9 cm aneurysm in the same aorta? Am I just going to explode some day? I don’t know. It’s a little scary.
