Knee bursitis
PMR for 2.5 years & on Pred for 20 months. Now down to 6mg & most symptoms under control but recently developed pain in right knee. It’s fine when sitting but painful when walking. I don’t think it’s bone - more Bursitis, synovitis or tendinitis I think. Anyone else? Any advice? I’ve read where 100% of PMR suffers have one of these conditions in/around at least one joint. I also think my PMR was triggered by the flu vaccine adjuvant - the research is quite strong to support this.

Yes. My rheumatologist said pmr is basically bursitis of the joints. I had olecranon bursitis in both elbows, plus in shoulders, both wrists and knees, esp right, probably due to an old injury. It was esp bad in knees and shoulders. I am in remission now and just dealing with remainder of old knee injury which I am hoping to be done with soon.
I have pain in all of the above. I am coming off of Prednisone right now and attributed the reason for it to that but I am not so sure now. I know it’s not bone in my knee because one knee is a replacement and the other is the original manufacture model but the pain is the same in both. I felt so good when the doctor told me I was over PMR and so disappointed when the pains didn’t go away. One more gate to get over I guess.
Have had intermittent swelling and pain in one or both knees several times over the past year. Never treated it in any way but it seems to go away on its own. Presently at 2 mg prednisone, 8 weeks into kevzara, and hoping for remission. Fingers crossed.
What is the evidence for the flu vaccine connection?
I’m sorry to hear how much you’ve gone through - & hope it stays away now! What treatment did you have? Did your rheumatologist up your pred/steroids? Or some other drug? And how long did it take you to overcome the problem?
Good luck with the Kevzara - I’d be very interested to know your thoughts once you’ve settled into it. There are a few articles out there re the flu vaccine adjuvant that seem to make sense - my PMR started shortly after my first shot. I then went on to have 2 more before the penny dropped. I discounted the Covid vaccine as a culprit as I had that after the PMR started - but now suspect adjuvants in that may play a part in some cases too. Apparently one size adjuvant doesn’t fit all & patients should be made aware of this & be given a choice - or so the thinking goes. The EJR published Relapse of polymyalgia following adjuvanted influenza vaccine: A case based review - but there are more articles out there. If you Google Polymyalgia and the influenza vaccine you’ll see a few sites that offer case studies - nothing concrete but enough to make you wonder. More research needs to be done - we need answers to the causes of this painful & life changing ailment.
Same thing happened to me and a year later is still happening only now moved to include my hip…interrupts sleep and swells up making jeans uncomfortable..I find swimming in very cold water helpful …feels better immediately…and last for a few hours …hope this helps
