Bupropion Side Effects - Tremors?

Posted by danielledep @danielledep, Dec 27, 2023

I started Bupropion XL (150 mg) almost seven weeks ago. Is it possible to start experiencing new side effects at the six week mark?

About three days into my sixth week I started randomly having a tremor in my left hand when I gripped something tight. It stopped after about half an hour but I still felt “shaky” for a few days in my arms and hands. Now five days later and I had a quick bout of shaking and tremor in my right hand and not while gripping. I can describe the feeling as how it feels when your foot or hand falls asleep and you’re getting the sensation back. I feel that way in my arms and hands mostly. When I wake up my legs do also feel a bit shaky.

I’ve read that tremors can be a side effect, but is it common for this to develop after you’ve already been on the medication for six weeks without experiencing this up until this point?

I made a doctor’s appointment to rule anything serious out, but it only just came to me that maybe it’s a result of the medication.

Wellbutrin can take weeks to reach full effect, both benefits and side effects. Contact the provider who prescribed the Wellbutrin and ask about.

Ask if Wellbutrin could be causing, if so will it continue or be short term and be honest how much it is effecting you. May need to switch to a different dosage or medication.

I would say YES, it can definitely be the cause of your tremors. I developed tremors after one month of taking klonopin. Yes, they are in different classifications but you do need to discuss with your physician for sure. But both of these drugs have a potential side effect being tremors!!

I was on Wellbutrin for quite a while ( over 6 months). I was taking 300 mg every morning. I’ve had those trembling the few days after he upped my dose to 450 mg. I asked him if that could be the cause since it started shortly after he increased my dose and he said no. “Wellbutrin doesn’t have a symptom of that kind of side effect.”
Briefly what happened was I had a head tremble and I was lifting a large cup of iced coffee.

I could not bring it to my mouth without putting my second hand on the bottom to keep it steady. I was so taken aback by that new symptom of trembling hard enough that I could not bring a cup up unless I used 2 hands
I thought, the heck with this and got up from my chair. I immediately fell back to sitting back down again. I did that twice until I asked a nurse to take me upstairs to my room (assisted living facility) my legs fell out from under me and my hands and arms were worthless.

She practically dragged me back to. My room that I share with another guy . The nurse had dropped me off per my instructions.

1 foot from the bed and I could not pull myself on it. Finally my roommate said I looked terrible so he got the nurse to come up and she called 911. It felt like what I thought was a possible mild seizure. The hospital did all kinds of tests and diagnosis was “nausea!” It said it was more than nausea as I wouldn’t have 911 come get me for that reason.

Has anyone ever taken Celexa for anxiety and depression. I’m taking Paxil for a very long time and am concerned about the heart affects. My Dr. suggested Celexa?

Everybody is different but he upped my dose to 450 mg at bedtime for sleep along with Seroquel 300 mg.
I developed these tremors that shook my whole body. Finally got a hold of my psychiatrist and he said that Wellbutrin would not have that symptom. Says it has nothing to do with these side effects. I’ve been without one for a while so we’ll see if I get it again.

I took Paxil for 15 years. I lost all motivation and initiative. Had to titrate slowly off of it. Took me over six months to titrate from 45 mg to zero without rebound effects. Started Lexapro and have never had to increase nor have I experienced those negative side effects as I did with Paxil. Best of luck!

Like Laurie said, it takes time for the medication to starting functioning in your body. Usually weeks. I have had some minor symptoms like dry mouth and irritability. I have had tremors, but I might have them from some other condition.

I remember who I was before the medication so I have been ok with it. It is good that you are talking to your doctor about it. Never be afraid to do so. Remember, everyone has different reactions to medications.

For what its worth, a psychiatrist friend of mine recommended Wellbutrin/Bupropion as an anti-depressant for me. He does not treat me, but I sometimes turn to him (and he checks on me) for a second opinion/guidance if I have any concerns.
