Thumping in right ear, only triggered by sound
This is a strange problem and difficult to explain so please bear with me here. This has been happening for almost 2 years now.
If both of my ears are completely exposed, 90% of the time I have no issues. Hearing is even on both ears. The other 10% of the time, certain midrange frequencies cause my right ear to thump along with the sound and usually only when they're pretty loud.
Now the main issue is that 100% of the time, if my right ear is partially covered for whatever reason (let's say I'm laying down on my side and part of it is covered, if I wear a hooded shirt over my head, or even if I put my hand over my right ear slightly), the thumping happens along with the sound. So let's say someone speaks a 4 syllable word, I'll get a thump with each syllable. Or if I'm hearing footsteps, each footstep causes a thump. This seems to happen along all frequencies (except maybe the very high ones). The weird thing is the thumping doesn't happen if I completely seal my LEFT ear. It'll only happen if my left ear is completely exposed and my right ear partially covered. It doesn't even have to be covered all the way. I can put my hand about 5 inches away from my ear and it'll trigger this problem.
I unfortunately can't afford to go to a ENT right now so I'm hoping someone has an idea about what's going on here. One thing probably worth mentioning is I've had acid reflux for 4 years. I actually went to an ENT because of pain all on my right side....my ear, throat, neck and head. He did an endoscopy but said he didn't see anything there to worry about, and thought acid reflux is causing my pain so he prescribed me some Ranitidine which I've been taking since then (just stopped a few months ago though). It did definitely help the ear pain when I began taking it but I did still have reflux episodes probably once a month throughout the 4 years. I'm thinking maybe this has caused some ear damage but I'm really not sure.
I appreciate any help I can get.

Sorry, more grievances…I rarely look for solutions for my body aches, pains and oddities unless I feel they are seriously concerning. I don’t read threads or write comments like these because of the carpal tunnel issues that I have now ; which are post covid related. And most doctors don’t know unless it’s my long covid doctors, or they don’t care. It’s just a real drag. I realize I am a minority now that mo one really cares about, including doctors, government and society.
Has anyone received any answers? I’m wondering if it has to do with medications? Anyone on antidepressants/ssris? I heard about a correlation.
Just wanted to update. My tinnitus and whooshing are gone, seems to be something I develop with long covid, which both times lasted 9 months. Additionally, I have been diagnosed with MCAS and after getting an epi shot last week, my ears have opened and are no longer hurting.
Hi. I found this post googling my sympthoms.
I have a thumping in my left ear mainly triggered by high pithched sounds. It follows the sound and stops if the sounds stops. It started 2 years ago it is getting worse to the point I am no longer able to live like before...the thumping is triggered by the telephone, a piano playing, a dog barking, a bird singing, people laughing or coughing, children talking, a door crackling, a fork touching a plate and many others. I Went to see some Ents and the last one told me I have a patulous eustachian tube ( which is a condition mainly characterised by autophony, so different sympthoms). Has any of you heard of patulous eustachian tube? I also noticed that if i put a earplug in my RIGHT ear, this thumping in my LEFT does not happen.
I’m having the same problem when a certain person talks. Supposedly it’s called. Tonic Tensor Tempani "syndrome" TTTS.
Thank you! it has been so hard to put into words what Ive been experiencing and googling my symptoms keeps leading me to tinnitus which never seemed accurate. Thank you!
Can anyone help? I am feeling desperate becsuse of this an unable to live a normal life. No doctor has been able to help me. This does not correspond to tonic tensor typani sydrome as the thumping is caused by sounds and does not happen randomly.
I have the exact same thing going on now for quite a few years. It's very annoying. As I also experience very loud tinnitus or ringing in my ears that drives me mad. It's so loud. But the right ear is what I'm experiencing the thud noise per every spoken syllable that I hear. It's very frustrating. I wish I knew more about what's causing this madness so I can help to lesson the noise... it's almost as if it's painful due to the annoyance.
I've posted on this site in another channel and I'm glad I found this one, as people's descriptions of the issue is closer to what I have. I had a brain MRI on 12/7/23 and 2 days later I started hearing a whoosh sound in my right ear. It isn't loud, but more like the background noise of engines and wind in an airliner. Shortly after I noticed the whoosh, I noticed that the sound of certain pitches caused a strange effect. For example, if someone is speaking at one of those frequencies, I can hear their words "in the room" as normal in my left ear and in my right ear, but I can also hear muffled sounds of the words directly in my ear, almost like something is creating those sounds inside my ear canal. It's not thumping per se; it's more like the sound the parents make on the old Charlie Brown cartoons. "Hello, how are you" sounds like "vmmm, vmmm vmm vmm". And it's not just people's voice, but any sound in that range. And, like others have mentioned, I hear it mostly when my right ear is not facing the sound. I even hear it when I'm in another room away from the sound; it's like it goes straight to my eardrum.
How did you end the tinnitus? I have it bad now for about 3 months. It's the high pitched squealing sound that power lines make. Sometimes putting drops in ear or peroxide seems to lessen it and some days I don't notice it. I di not have covid and did not have the covid shot either. I will say I have had vertigo for 45 years and I think it's an inner ear thing. I need to see ENT but my neurologist said there is nothing they can do about it. I found that cupping my ears and tapping on the back of head just below occipital bone bri gs some relief. I found that while googling tinnitus.
