What do you do for Neuropathy itch?

Good morning everyone. I am desperately in need of help with what is called Neuropathy itch. I have SFN (small fiber neuropathy) and am a medical cannabis user for pain. I don't know what to use for this itching. It appears that it reaches through several skin layers. No matter how much you scratch you make it worse, not better. Once you start itching, it's over....your are stuck scratching.

Have you tried certain baths? Oatmeal? I have a steroid cream called Triamcinolone Acetonide. Not exactly a wonder drug. Is there a better one?

The itching results in a terrible level of anxiety. I try to run away from it and cannot. It reminds me of summer in Minnesota when the mosquitoes launch their attacks. I am female with "O" negative blood which they just devour.

Even if you have a solution for other than neuropathy, please share and I will happily do the research. The stress of isolated living and a form of depression that is about our global community also creeps in.

The only thing that works right now for food is gelato.......Salted caramel, if you please. I hope you are all well and blessed with good health today.

Hey there @lorirenee1, I knew you would have a total understanding of the itch wall I just ran into. My dermatologist and PCP are collaborating. I took Benedryl last weekend. You say that works best. I will replenish.

Lori, how often do you get this SFN itch or whatever it is called? Do you have any warnings? What makes you think it is from Medical Cannabis? I actually found that a 3:1 THC/CBD balm on my entire body after a warm shower helped. So I calculated that at a jar a day times 5 days would be $165. Whew.......Maybe I should start with the anti-itch creme. Thanks for responding and keep an eye out for Chris's miracle itch drug. That's my next project.

My doctor says I do not have neuropathy as a diagnosis for my weird itch on part of my foot and my head all the time (Scalp) and sometimes elsewhere. I don't know what to do but continue to use anti itch creams that help just a little. Benadryl too.. It helps for awhile. No redness, or signs of why.
Mostly at night for my foot. All times of the day for my scalp.

I had the same experience with naltrexone e.g. it stopped my urge to scratch immediately, skin, itching, scratching, literally disappeared 100% for about one month, then the problem came "roaring back" and Naltrexone had virtually no affect thereafter ??

I have used the steroid you mentioned for my Granuloma Annulare and it's helpful. I have neuropathy from my calves to my toes. If I get anxiety with those maddening itch attacks so my dermatologist gave me Ativan (only if all else fails). Palmers Shea Butter Balm and Benedryl Spray is helpful. Ice pack has even helped. My Neurologist in Nassau Bay, Texas ordered a specially mixed pump cream that I use now (insurance doesn't cover) @ $85 for 2+oz. I use it at night plus it it has pain medicines in it. It has no name, but my other doctors knew of it, but ( not useful for deep pains). I can only tell you to contact the pharmacy where I get it. I did get good results with this and pharmacy said they have repeat customers with no complaints. Good evening @joannaceciliani19 .......Let me be the first to welcome you to Connect. I am very interested in your "weird" itch. I am not a health professional. However, I have just spent several years dealing with and figuring out the "itch". It almost did me in. I am so pleased to be able to wake up every morning without the "weird" itch.

First.....let's talk about the itch on part of your foot and elsewhere. That may be atopic dermatitis. If so, it will respond to the medication use. That is Dupixent! It comes as an injection pen that you easily learn to manage yourself. You inject the medication into your thigh once every two weeks. From the first day I used it August 13, 2022 until today I have not had any interior or exterior itches. Life is liveable. And that includes my scalp.

Before I discovered Dupixent, my dermatologist had me on a special scalp program that also worked very well. Now with Dupixent I don't need that program at all.

However, I will give you the information that I have. There is a special shampoo and solution that you can use. It worked very well for me for several years until I discovered Dupixent. Tomorrow I will use MyChart to get the names and dosage information for you.

I will also include the Dupixent contact information. Tonight I am already in bed and the lights are out in the house. I think everyone is sleeping.

So hang on and if for some reason you don't get my message......just holler at me..

Good evening @joannaceciliani19. Guess what my friend. I didn't get the information for you today regarding the scalp itch.
This will be hard to believe. However, over the weekend, somehow I did some damage to my Reverse shoulder replacement. I didn't fall or crash. It just became very painful when I moved or put pressure on that arm.
So...I thought....well, I will go to my MFR therapist and see if she can help me today. Nope...that didn;t work. She found that I had an indentation and some other new "pitch points". That is my name for the one spot that is very touchy. So she called the Orthopedic clinic to schedule an immediate imaging appointment so that she would be sure that she wasn't doing any additional damage.

Three hours later.....the physician and I were reviewing the images and checking on the "pitch points". He told her that he doubted if she could do any more damage with the MFR therapy. However, he will be getting my operative documents from Eisenhower in Palm Springs and we will meet again to see what might benefit from some readjustment. Yikes. I thought I was all done. Is this my Christmas present???? Just what is Santa thinking about?

So, I will pursue your information tomorrow. So sorry.

The Benadryl spray is best.

I rub my feet with menthol like Vick's Vapo Rub type products. I go to the local drug store and look over there OTC pain med rubs and sprays. Also the muscle rubs.

Here is the notice from my dermatologist.
For the scalp itch, the shampoo was Head and Shoulders on day one, T/Sal on day two, and then your regular shampoo on day three. The solution for the scalp was Lidex solution once a night for a week, then twice weekly use as needed. Hope it works for you.
