What is the correct dosage for 75 year old, taking Magnesium Glycinate

I am a 75 year old male & I am about to start taking Magnesium Glycinate for bone health. I would like to know what is the correct dosage for a man of my age. The many recommendations are confusing as well as the labels on the bottles. I will list several labels as an example of what I mean:
1. Magnesium Glycinate, 500 mg, Fully Chelated
Magnesium 50 mg.
(from 500 mg. magnesium glycinate)
2. Magnesium Glycinate, Chelated 425 mg.
Calcium 189 mg.
Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate 425 mg.)
3. Magnesium Glycinate, 1330 mg. Buffered & Chelated
Magnesium 240 mg.
(from 1,330 mg. of magnesium glycinate, chelate buffered- magnesium bisglycinate chelate, magnesium oxide)
As you can see, it can be very confusing especially when you get
different opinions from various party's who are not experts.
If you can help me to determine the best dosage, I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

I take my magnesium in ratio to calcium…you want a 2:1 cal/mag ratio. I take mag citrate also so I have to figure that in when I take my glycinate. Take glycinate at night since it has a calming effect. Also, don’t take your magnesium with your calcium. They compete for absorption. I take my calcium with meals and the mag citrate after and the glycinate about an hour before bed.

Thanks for that information. I never considered the absorption part of this process. I guess that I can take my calcium in the morning and afternoon and then take my magnesium glycinate before bed. I was hoping to do this without a doctor but I may have to in order to get the proper dosage. Again, many thanks for the information and I can use it as the start of this process.

In addition to @evillarreal's helpful tips, it is worth noting that you may want to include, or inquire with, your provider when taking a new supplement as well if you haven't already done so. Are you taking any other medications? If so, some supplements can react with medications and/or alter how a medication or supplement is absorbed liked @evillarreal mentioned.

I've decided to do just what you mentioned. I will schedule an appt with my primary doctor and review this with her to make sure that there are no conflicts between all of my medications as well as the correct dosage for the magnesium. Thanks for the information. I do appreciate it very much.

There is something about proper absorption and vitamin D3 being important and calcium also. Not a doctor just read about it because calcium and D 3 are always together.

You can also get magnesium by taking an epsom salt bath or just soaking your feet in warm water and epsom salt.

My doctor just put me on a regimen of calcium and D3 last month after reviewing my blood test results. I've been neglectful over the years regarding supplements but now my body is showing it. I've certainly been more acutely aware of taking better care of myself and hope that in the long run it pays off. Thanks for your input. I do appreciate it very much.

You can also get magnesium by taking an epsom salt bath or just soaking your feet in warm water and epsom salt.

This is something else that I will be trying. I saw a doctor on Youtube talking about the benefits of an epsom salt bath but he did not mention anything about magnesium. I do like the soaking of the feet to absorb magnesium. Thanks for the info and I definitely will be adding this to my health regimen. God bless!

You can also get a boost of magnesium using magnesium dead sea mag flakes. They are are a bit pricey but i think they do wonders, especially if you wake in the night with leg cramps, restless leg, or cramps anywhere. The most effecient way to use them is mixed with water and sprayed on your legs, let dry (they may itch), and then wipe them off about 20 minutes later. The brand i buy comes w/a spray bottle. I have some cramps that are so severe they are really Tetany, ie your hand for instance cramps up so hard that you can pull your fingers apart, etc. and they pop right back. Very painful. Like most of you people i have a extrememly long list of problems i have been dealing w/for 30-35 years. My newest rhuemy seems quite good, plus my pcp is awesome. The rheumy has thrown in Sjogrens now with my Mixed Connective Tissue disease, have been on prednisone off/on for many years. Starting on Methotrxate in mid Jan. Sorry, back to the mag-i take 500mg of magnesium glycinate daily, this seems to work better than alot of other forms of mag. I AM a 68 yr old woman so can't tell you exactly what YOU need, you must consider your age, wieght and other factors. For me, i've spent thousands of $ on supplements, and it takes quite awhile for some to give you full benefit. Good luck and Happy Holidays and everyday!

Thank you so much for that information. I just started taking the 500 mg magnesium glycinate the other day. I'm glad you responded with your experience using this dosage. I recently started taking supplements like calcium with D3, and others and had to stop a few days ago because it is making me light headed. Next week I will re-incorporate them but it will be at a slower rate so that my system can adjust to the supplements. The strongest one is the calcium with D3. I've had to take one dosage in the morning and the other at night. Can't take them together at this time. I do have sciatica and osteoarthritis in my lower back. After losing 70 lbs. in the last 6 months, I hope that the supplements will help restore my bone strength and my overall health. Again, thanks for the info and if you have any other info that you want to share that can help me in my quest for healthier and better body, please let me know.
