Relapsed AML: Anyone choosing no treatment?
AML diagnosed in May 2021, chemo and consolidation and in remission by September 2021. I was in remission for 19/20 months ish when my genetic markers began showing up. NPM1 being my main driver. First in a BMB then in the blood, but at very low levels. I'm choosing to have the rest of my time be fabulous and choose not to have treatment, however, I'm struggling to get an idea of the timeline. I'm hoping some doctors will chime in here! I'd love to hear from others who choose no treatment, though

I would try to get into a clinical trial, quickly, and I don't understand why they won't do a bone marrow transplant for you.
Are you in molecular relapse or total relapse?
Get to another hematologist oncologist as quickly as you can!
I understand
How long ago did your aml treatments start?
That's the thing they gave me a month to live but no meds to me my to control it. They have neglected to tell me anything about my desease.
I feel so cheated by them Drmicheal Bryne and Dr Johan brandes. Have dragged there feet on getting me to a second opinion Dr that DOES do marrow transplants
I have 4 related donors ready to see if they match but until I get on the registry they can't move forward
I feel MURDERED by them 😭😭😭
I'm thinking, what if you went to a hospital ER? That would at least put you in touch with a different doctor.
@pazzion8lady Your situation is so disturbing! Having an untreated relapse from AML will allow this disease to move along rapidly. Have you been offered ANY treatment after you found out your AML has returned? There are abrogating drugs which can often slow the progression, at least long enough for you to get in with another hematologist oncologist.
At the very least, if there truly is nothing that can be done to offset this, you should be offered palliative care and/or hospice! It feels like you’ve been hung out to dry! If this progresses you’ll be requiring blood and possibly platelet transfusions over the coming weeks.
I’m liking @timt347 recommendation to go to the ER…especially if you’re feeling light headed, temperature over 100.4, extremely fatigued, weak, short of breath, cough, or any prolonged bleeding from a cut or a nose bleed… With AML these are all very legitimate reasons to go to the ER.
Don’t rely on your past doctors to get you this recommendation. You’re going to need to reach out on your own. Please check in your area for possible other doctors and make a call!
Write down what you want to say when you make the call. Be succinct and don’t talk about your past doctors. Move forward to the next step! Let the scheduler know that this is urgent and you need a second opinion ASAP because you’re not ready to stop fighting! Will you do that please??
Yes mam thank you for your KIND words
I have an apt w a doctor at Vanderbilt next wed at 830 and I get blood and platelets every day wo days right now. I'm not giving up GOD please bring me a miracle
Onc again thank you
Oh, thank goodness you have an appointment! I had AML so I am fully aware of how quickly this disease can take us out. Sending positive vibes for you on this journey! Please keep me in the loop with what you find out, ok? Hugs.
I would too! I'm so sorry 😞
I'm glad you've got an appointment with another doctor and yes!! go to the ER as suggested.
Please keep us posted so we can support you; you'll be in our thoughts
kpurtill, your courage and understanding impress me. When my end is near, I pray I will have wisdom as you have. When I was in Iraq and Afghanistan, we thought they we may be killed any day. Somehow this feeling lifted the deep anxiety of the moment. I wish you all the best. “Only by living at the edge of death can you understand the indescribable joy of life.” – Shogun
I agree with that quote, wholeheartedly. Thank you for your words, I'm grateful for the support!
