Gallbladder removal: Anyone still having complications?

Posted by jtlang55 @jtlang55, Nov 1, 2018

After having my gallbladder removed 14 yrs. ago, I still have issues with digesting anything with fat. Combine that with IBS and you're in real trouble. I'm trying to put weight on while the majority of people are trying to take it off. That of course brings it's own stress and as we all know that's the worst thing for any health issue. I am currently on a anti biotic and am being balanced off with a probiotic. Seems to be helping my stomach and the diarrhea associated with IBS. This is the first thing that has made me feel normal after seeing multiple gastroenterologists with no positive results. Is anyone familiar with Lypo Gold. It's an enzyme that is suppose to help aid with fat digestion. Just wondering what input anyone has on how it works and their results from taking it. Thank you.

Hello @debhammel and welcome to the Digestive Health support group on Mayo Connect. I appreciate you sharing your experience with a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Many of us have found the low FODMAP eating plan to be helpful with GI symptoms.

You mentioned that you are seeing your gastroenterologist later this month. It this to get some answers to the problem of loose stools?

Yes, it is. My husband and I had a bout of food-related diarrhea on September 9 and while he recovered completely in less than 24 hours, I have had frequent loose stools ever since. I suspect my gut biome has been disrupted by low-dose Doxycycline I was taking for Rosacea and stopped taking that but have not seen any real improvement yet. Also taking Immodium. Hoping for answers/relief when I see my gastroenterologist on Tuesday. I've been on a low FODMAP diet for 6 days - not sure how soon to expect results from that. I have less GI discomfort but no change in bowel habits.

Whenever I take antibiotics, I have GI problems as well. Have you tried taking probiotics? You can get probiotics through food, like yogurt, Kefir, etc., and you can also purchase probiotics over the counter.

Here is a list of foods that are high in probiotics,

Have you tried probiotics (either through food or supplements)?

I gained a lot of weight. Ended up having a gastric by pass and now everything greasy I eat gives me indigestion. Or nausea. Zofran to the rescue! But it help me loose 47 pounds. Then I got Covid for 2 weeks and went down to 104 pounds and I was so shocked by how I looked. Now I weigh 95 pounds and I have had to replace more clothing. I want to be 116 lbs like I was before this May. I hope the doctors at the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville FL will be able to give me answers to my problems. My doctors here are all very concerned. They have done test after test and the most they have found is mild IBS.
I want some answers. What ever they may be.
Still hopeful.

I am a 33yo F. I had my gallbladder removed four months ago after losing 30lbs (I was originally 148lbs) in a month and a half. I couldn’t eat without pain under my right rib and nausea. I was in and out of the ER for weeks. No imaging or labs or tests showed that it needed to come out. The surgical team left it up to me to decide if I wanted it out or not. I was so sick I decided to have them remove it. They removed it laparoscopically. The pathology showed chronic inflammation. My recovery was absolutely brutal and now, four months post-op, I’m still having pain in the surgical site and feel unwell. I’m getting nausea, bloating, and a burning internal sensation under my right rib, in the gallbladder site that radiates around to my back. Ice packs on my abdomen helps, and a short course of low dose prednisone seemed to help as well. I’ve been to GI and Rheumatology and no one seems to know whats wrong or how to help me. I have Hashimoto’s, autoimmune inner ear disease, and PCOS. I had Covid three months before my first symptom. Symptoms seem worse when I’m on my period, and in the evenings. I was tachycardic for three months after surgery. Has anyone experienced some thing similar to this?

@angdickinson
Have you had any recent testing done by the Gastroenterologist?
I developed pain and nausea quite a while after the gallbladder surgery.
I had an MRCP- MRI of the bile duct and the opening into the intestine- that showed “sludge” in the common bile duct- making it difficult to empty out into the intestine. I then had a procedure- ERCP- to widen the opening.

Had painful symptoms for a long time after gallbladder removal. Also have Crohn's disease. I found that taking a digestive enzyme (recommended by my doctor) Similase Lipo before every meal helped a lot.

Hi @marija73, welcome. I moved your question to this existing discussion in the digestive Health support group:

I did this so that you can connect with others like @hopeful33250 @fourof5zs @debhammel @astaingegerdm @tootie2 and others.

Marija, what test did you have that showed gallstones may have been left inside? When is your MRI?
