Forteo Costs
I will be starting Forteo soon. My medicare plan D covers both Forteo brand and Teriparatide generic. My monthly cost is roughly $1500/mos. Is anyone aware of additional programs to cover the cost? I'm not eligible for the Forteo Savings card as I'm on medicare. Nor am I eligible for the Lilly Foundation program as my income is over $78k.
Second question. From what I've read so far it looks like the cost of needles is not covered in the plan costs, rather an additional cost outside the plan. If this is correct, where are you purchasing these needles and what is the ball park cost?
I'm hoping my questions will help others as well.

You need a prescription for the needles and can pick them up at any pharmacy.
Mini Needle BD ultra-fine III or Ultra-Fine PRO 4mm 100ct
The best price on the needles is $51.99 at CVS. Double what I last paid. Hydrate before the injection. You might have a salty snack. I take 250mg of calcium a couple of hours before.
You'll experience vasodilation minutes after the injection. So be careful. Your balance might be a little off.
You don't need to pinch your skin with these needles, but if you do and then let go before injecting, you'll be less likely to bruise.

I didn't realize that a box of pen needles were so expensive ($51.99). (I get my 100-count box through my HMO's pharmacy for around three dollars.)
I did see one can get BD ultra-fine pen short needles (31g x 8mm), which I use, for less than $30 a box through diabetes suppliers and Amazon. (Lilly Answer Center told me the BD pens were part of the Forteo clinical trial protocol decades ago.)

1 ReactionYou can buy needles online or at a drugstore, but some stores require you to have a prescription, but maybe just showing your Forteo prescription will be enough. There are some diabetic supply sites that offer many kinds. I use 5mm, 31 gauge needles. They are 6 bevel, which are hard to find, but 5 bevel are more available and much more comfortable than 3 bevel.
I get my needles for Forteo at CVS drug store a box of 100 for 8.00
I just learned that my copay for Forteo is $777.76. Blue Cross pays the rest...I cannot afford to pay over $700 a month for a medication. Does anyone know if there are discount coupons available for this drug. I've never searched for coupons before so I don't know what I'm doing. Many thanks.
Disregard this post. My insurance gave me the company’s number and they provided info that brought the cost down to almost nothing!

1 ReactionI’m embarrassed to say I can’t find it for some reason. The way it works is you call your insurance company and ask them for the number of the company to get the prescription discount. I don’t know if different insurance companies have different numbers to call so try that. My apologies.
