Today I am a veteran and an octogenarian (today is my birthday).

Hi Captboat!
Thank you for your service and Happy Birthday! We are so lucky in America to have people like you who will fight for this country and our freedom! My 6th great grandfather fought with George Washington in the Revolutionary war, my father in WWII and my husband in Vietnam. Veteran's Day is a day to remember and be thankful for people like you and my relatives! I have my flag out flying proudly! I remember what I was taught in grade school in the 1950's about the flag and it's colors: The white is for our freedom, the red is for the blood our soldiers gave for our freedom, there is a star for each state of the Union and the blue is for God's blue sky. Unfortunately, none of my neighbors flew a flag on Veteran's Day. Ours was the only flag out in the neighborhood.

@captboat Let me add my thank you for your service, and a belated birthday wish. My load of candles is not as large as @jakedduck1 however :))

Yesterday I sent thank yous to my little sister [4 years Air Force] and bons son [Army, three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan]. I also said "thank you for your service" to every veteran I came across, who were immensely pleased to have someone say it right to their faces.

Happy Birthday, and thank you for giving part of your life to protect others.
When one reaches 80, one realizes that one has an expiration date. You know that you have been given a reasonable life span. Then there is the quality of life that is important. My doctors told me that their job is not to make me live as long as possible but to give me a quality of life as long as possible. I think my job is to make the most of it!
And it is wise to understand who one is, what has happened in one's life and accept it.

Thanks for your service. I'm almost 81 and a vet blessed with a wonderful wife and three wonderful daughters, SILs and 6 grandchildren. Can't ask more from life.
