Your experience during & after Transrectal Prostate Biopsy (TRUS)
Hi, my husband is scheduled for a trans rectal prostate biopsy tomorrow. His PSA has been rising and his urologist recommended it. I’ve read horrible accounts on the internet of complications and I was wondering if anyone would share their experience, both positive and negative. Has anyone had an uneventful recovery? I’m hoping he will delay the procedure until we know more. Thank you and God bless.

I too was concerned about complications but had faith in my Mayo trained urologist. Was not bad at all. Little pinch with the numbing. Sampling few minutes later.
Prep is important with the antibiotics before and after procedure. Heading for a robotic Da Vinci prostatectomy in few days. Good Gleason score 3+4. So no worries. After all it is what it is. First things first.

1 ReactionI had 5 transrectal biopsies during my two years of being on AS before I had a RP. My urologist commented about the risk of infection but with an antibiotic beforehand the risk of infection was only about 1%. I also asked about the pain and he indicated that comments patients ranged from "it hurt like hell to no big deal". The only thing I didn't like was the sound of the snip as the sample was taken.
I was put under, so no pain during the procedure. Slight burn afterwards while peeing, but little else.
Very little blood noticed. Now, the "markers" procedure was a different situation!

My experience with the biopsy was identical to Philsprostate’s experience. No issues with the procedure. I drove myself home and had no recovery issues at all. Results showed Gleason 4+3, so I had the RALP surgery this past January.
Recovery is going quite well, and PSA has been undetectable in two followup tests.

3 ReactionsI have had 4 of them they took a culture before hand to give me the correct antibiotic no problems but before I do another one I am looking for a Urologist in Omaha that does transperinal
Mayo Clinic can do them transperinal. I had my done transperinal (20 biopsies) under anesthesia. If someone had not told me I had biopsies I would not have known it was done. No pain or discomfort.
The trans-rectal comes with a 2% extra chance of serious infections requiring hospital stays. The transperninal chance of infection is almost zero. 1 in 500 will get an infection. My urologist wanted to do trans-rectal due to my heart failure but my heart failure doctor said I was fine to have in done transpernial and under anesthesia as had several surgeries under anesthesia with no issues.
If you (rice) live close to a Mayo Clinic consider Mayo Clinic to do them. All of them, Jacksonville, Rochester, and Phoenix, all do the transpernial as well as transrectal.
