Hi! My name is Kimberly and 1 week after my husband and I got married he was diagnosed with non small lung cancer stage 1. We got married 1 month ago and have been trying to process the diagnosis while waiting to see the surgeon which is this wednesday. He of course if going through so much but I feel lost because I am so strong for him yet falling apart. And I'm looking for support sources for me so I can be his strength- I feel so guilty when I break down in front of him. I am a Respiratory Therapist so I know a little too much about much of this on the critical medical side however I do intellectually know we caught it so early. But still, I feel everyone addresses the emotional needs of the patient diagnosed but I have no guidance on how to take care of me and support him...especially emotionally. Any guidance would be so appreciated!

@kimberlyhamilton. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can’t even imagine what you are thinking and feeling right now. It must be so difficult. I’m going to ask @merpreb to try to answer you. She has had lung cancer for about 15 years and is the most positive and fun person! One suggestion that I would have is that you listen and take notes when you see the surgeon, but don’t make any big decisions yet. You two need to calmly think this over and possibly get a 2nd opinion.
This is a difficult time for you so you want to think clearly and listen to good advice. Start to build your support system with like-minded people.
Please, ask as many questions as you want. Everyone here would like to help.

Hi Kimberly, just wanted to check in to see how YOU are doing?
