Getting Off of Omeprazole: Share your success stories please.

Hi there: Has anyone had success in weaning off of Omeprazole? I take it for GERD. Thank you in advance!

Wouldn't taking vinegar increase your GERD since it is an acid? I take 4 generic Nexiums plus a Zantac along with D3 and magnesium. My blood work is fine.

This sounds hopeful
I've been taking Omeprazol daily since 2017 and I believe it is not helpful for my sclerosis of the GI tract
Thank you

I have been slowing weening off. I started with one day a week, taking vitamin E instead of omeprazole. My doctor recommended this and said you can’t take them together on same day, and just to alternate between the two of them.it was rough at first and I took it slow, doing this one day a week for months. Those days would be tough, but pushed though. Then I increased it two days a day (taking vitamin E instead of it). It took me over a year to wean off. If I have a really bad day, then the next day I might take it, but that was it. Unfortunately this past month, I have gone backwards and now taking omeprazole 3-4 days week. I need to take weaning off again. I have good things about Silver Fern to heal/fix Gerd but it is expensive. You just have to find what works for you and just start. You can do it!

How much Vit E do you take a day when you don't take the PPI?

I did NOT have success getting off of Omeprazole and feel like I am trapped in a loop of a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Background is I am asthmatic and suffer from EOE and Gerd which apparently asthma and EOE go hand in hand. I have had an endoscope which also pointed out Barretts Esophagus. I have been taking Omeprazole for almost 4 years- started with taking 20MG evening and morning. Eventually I started taking just 1- 20mg in the morning and everything was going along fine for the past few years- was seeing slight improvement in my swallowing from the EOE but last year came across some articles about the risks of taking omeprazole long term (lack of b12 absorption causing weak bones, kidney issues, stomach cancer and dementia) so obviously concerned about that. I read a lot about getting off of omeprazole and the first two weeks to expect hyper secretion of stomach acid and then it should go back to normal function. The reasoning I thought I could get away from omeprazole was prior to being put on & having EOE I was drinking orange juice if I woke in the middle of the night thinking it was healthy and I also did not monitor how close to bed time I was eating so once I discovered this I have not done those habits in years. I was thinking I was only taking 20mg a day so I stopped and for about 2-3 days was normal, Three weeks ago was when I attempted to get off of omeprazole and these were the results: I guess the drug was still leaving my system as then what I read was true, extreme secretion of stomach acid for two weeks then it slowed up but at night it was active to where after two weeks my throat felt burnt and constricted so I gave it couple of nights taking tums thinking it would get better and finally made the decision to get back on omeprazole and it is starting to help but it's only been two days of back on omeprazole so hoping my throat and esophagus can continue to heal & I'll get back to where I was prior to my attempt. The other issue I experienced after a couple of weeks was I did seem to have lung/ issues as possibly the acid was affecting my lungs to where they were constricting to block the acid. Ultimately, I am trying to avoid esophageal cancer in the future and hope my EOE symptoms will continue to improve and I'll to gamble that the omeprazole side effects are just something I read about and not experienced. I will say this for the 2 weeks off of omeprazole and did not have any headaches. I am going to try and drink some aloe vera juice as well to see if that helps bring down the inflammation in my throat. I'm regretting even attempting to stop omeprazole at this point and after things heal again will speak with GI Dr. to see if any other alternatives. I wish everyone that is in the position of eliminating Omeprazole the best of luck & success!

If you want the positive effects of apple cider vinegar without the negative ones, try doing apple cider vinegar pills instead. I am on 2 different
PPTs for gastric reflux and issues with a cough that gets worse when I am lying down. I also have a lack of pancreatic enzymes, so I don’t digest and absorb the food I’ve eaten. I would not stop the omeprozole unless your doctor approves it. They can monitor any potential problems you may develop. The best thing is to keep track of any unusual symptoms you may notice, and tell your doctor right away. You know how your body should feel, and if things feel off, let your doctor know! That’s what he/she is there for. Don’t assume you know more than your doctor does. You can question him or her about the side effects and you should, but they have more medical knowledge than you do, and with the right equipment, they can help you make the right decision for you and your body

I have taken omeprazole on and off for over 20 years. I was treated for helicobacter pylori infection and prescribed omeprazole from then on.
As time has gone on, my GERD symptoms have become progressively worse. Right now, I am in pain almost constantly. I don’t really feel acid coming up in my throat much, but the chest pains and pain in my side are almost unbearable. It affects my life tremendously.
My doctor basically seems to think it’s largely in my head, and he does nothing but prescribe increasing amounts of omeprazole. My current dosage is 40 mg 2x per day. And it does absolutely nothing.
I had been reading about acv and reflux, so I figured why not. I stopped the omeprazole and started 1 tbsp acv in water before each meal. Miraculously, it seemed to work! For a whole week I had the best week in 20 years…then the pain started to return.
I am thinking of dropping the acv…I’ve been on it for 2 weeks now, and also staying off the omeprazole…because it was also not helping. I am at a loss as to what to do though, since I’m in so much pain I don’t even feel like living anymore.
If anyone has suggestions, I’m listening.

I found a study that shows amla (indian gooseberry) powder is as good as famotidine in handling reflux so I tried this natural solution and haven't taken medication since and its been years.

Have you had an endoscopy at all during all of this? I was on a PPI and after my 3rd endoscopy, my GI said to never take it again as my digestive tract cells were hypertrophic. If you have had GERD for a long time, have you been tested for SIBO (small intestinal bacteria), a fungal infection, a yeast infection or parasites? All of these can be culprits and need to be treated. A PPI only treats to the symptoms, not the cause of your symptoms. The cause(s) need to be eliminated. Your gut biome can be very unhealthy and needs building back up to deal with any of these infections, in addition using prebiotics and probiotics. This has been my journey and it takes time and the right doctor to test you and knows how to test and treat. Your vitamin and mineral levels also need testing to see what you are deficient in - a poor gut biome is not allowing your digestive tract to take in what is needed for health if your gut cannot digest food you are eating.
Best to you in finding answers.

Have had several endoscopies, liver scan, gall bladder scan, and no problems with gut biome.
It really IS a mystery.
