Osteoporosis treatment

Posted by mmodestti @mmodestti, Apr 5, 2023

My osteoporosis has gotten out of hand. In February 2022, I suffered five compression fractures (L1-L-5) and in November, three more (T-10- T-12). Each time I spent 10 to 12 weeks in excruciating pain.
My endocrinologist has suggested starting me on Tymlos for 2 years, and then moving on to Prolia. Has anybody used this medication (Tymlos)? How was your experience?

well I finished evenity 2 weeks ago with very minor side affects. Headache, tiredness and a bit achy for a day or so. Bone density and VFA is tomorrow to see what I did with my -3.0–3.3 spine and hip. I do have 4 different fractures in my past. 2 ribs and each wrist from rather forceful sports injuries over the last 10 years! I’m 67 and worried more about prolia!! I guess my choices are aledronate, reclast or prolia. I’m in it for the long haul so I wonder how that figures in for these choices. Please anyone with suggestions do not hesitate to weigh in. You ALL have been so incredibly helpful and no am very grateful. Cindy

Please let us know what improvements have happened with your testing.
One thing for sure is I would never take Prolia.

I have been on Prolia for about 8 years. I'm 71 and I've had very little side effects. I also exercise moderately and walk about 5 days a week for about 35 to 40 minutes each time. I do have low body weight and I'm struggling to gain weight. That's my story so far.

Artscaping,
I fear Fosamax because I have GERD. I did visit my longtime gastroenterologist yesterday to discuss this with him. He said that the only problem with Fosamax and GERD is if you don’t take it as directed and the pill becomes stuck going down. He also said that once the pill passes through your esophagus it is “clear sailing” and “home free.” I trust him, so will forge ahead with Fosamax when i finish Evenity. I have my 6th injections next week. I think the Evenity shots make me tired the next day, but other than that no problems.

Hi there....thanks for getting back to me. Yes, there are specific directions that you need to follow. Take it first thing in the morning before anything else goes in your mouth. Then sit up straight for 30 minutes .....before you have breakfast.

You will be fine.
Chris

@susanfarlcon52-Though I have not started any meds yet , I will share with you in discussion with Dr. McCormick, because I mentioned that in the past I was bothered with GERD , he told me he would recommend Actinol instead of Fosamax after 2 years of Forteo. Maybe check that out. Good luck!!!

Thank you imay, for sharing your experiences. I am so sorry you have had to suffer with these bone issues. I am 82 and am trying through exercise and diet to improve my spinal negative 3.2 scores. I hope your medications will help. If you don't mind, I wonder how old you are, just to compare with my own plight. My endocrinologist recommended Evenity but I am wary of it. The Black Box warnings frighten me. Other pharms present other problems because of my health history with esophageal problems.

I stoped zebenityafter 11 mos due to debilitating aches and pains. Tried Fosomax but that brought on aching and pain again. Had great results in spine with Evenity not much in other two DEXA sites. Just switched to Actonel. Will see how that goes!

I have the same injuries as you. Two years ago, I had slipped in my bathroom landing on my knees but ended up having the same injuries as you have. The Endo doctor had tried to get me on Tymlos but it was too expensive for me. I took it for a month and did not have any problems. My Primary doctor had been to a seminar on the Evenity and he had asked me if he could try to get me on that drug. Medicare paid for my 12 shots of Evenity. You just have to check with your insurance. I believe the Tymlos is a good drug, I just could not afford it. My injuries did not heal so I have been miserable for the last two years. After the Evenity, my surgeon decided that he would do surgery to fix my problems in my back. So, I will be having infusion surgery at the end of the month. I have had one shot of Prolia which after reading from the Prolia support group on Facebook, I am not so sure about. That site is about people who have had problems with that drug. However, everyone doesn't have the same problems. Some people don't have any issues.

This article is about obesity drugs not necessarily being tested on obese people who process drugs at a different rate than normal weight people do. Could there be a similar problem with the one-size-fits-all osteoporosis drugs and slender people ( e.g, those of us who weigh in the neighborhood of 100 lb.)?

I have the same question about weight. I weigh I08 lbs. and that’s one of my concerns re treatment for osteoporosis. Perhaps more side effects occur with smaller size and bones etc. Who knows? More research is necessary!!!!
