My stool softeners and miralax aren't working, how come?
I've been struggling with stomach issues for a long time now and it runs in my family. I went to the hospital recently and had to have a GI clean out through an NG tube. When I was discharged from the hospital they told me to take one stool softener at night and one stool softener in the morning and one capful of miralax each day. But it stopped working. I'm in a crazy amount of pain. I had a CT scan done when I was in the hospital, it showed I had stool stuck almost half way through my colon. But before my stay in the hospital, I had been to many other hospitals. No one could find anything, until I had that CT scan. iv had both scopes done, but the doctor didn't see anything wrong. I have no clue if it has something to do with it but I have really bad hashimoto. I have no idea what to do now. Please help me with what I should do next. Please and thank you.

Thank you. Will try that - trying to maintain with minimal intervention. Also doing low fodmap but not really sure it' works for this condition.
AGAIN - just increasing the miralax and fluid intake will work. increase 1/2 cup per day and split dose morning/evening - let me know if it works. if you go "too much" just cut back a bit the next day until you find the perfect amount for you.

I also had issues forever. I have been taking maralax for years, but I Take a full cap in the morning and 1/2 a cap
at night before bed. I have to say it does not work that great! I don't no how a softener would help.

Thx Denise. I have found Miralax really helpful too although I have to "push" it along with Dulcolax. That's not recommended by my GI but I 'm 68 and have to do it.
Just take more Miralax - it cannot hurt you . Dulcolax is a "laxative" that is not good to take on a long term basis. Just take more/drink more f luids with it and split the dose morning/evening so things "keep moving along" i am 69 and have been taking Miralax twice a day since i was 50 - lifesaver - lived on boxes and boxes of laxatives before - Miralax was a "life changer"

2 ReactionsI find that senna leaf tea works really well.
Thanks for your helpful reply Denise. I will try this.
let me know.. i tried EVERYTHING for decades and Miralax is only thing that works and it is not a true "laxative" which is not good to take long term - just asbsorbs water into the gut. i am confident that with the correct dose/fluid intake you will be going regularly every day
Have a GI Dr order a Sitz study. You swallo a pill and after a few days you are x rayed. If the pill is still in a part of your intestine then your motility is slow. They call it slow transit. All said then gets your GI Doc to prescribe a Prokinetic. Examples: Linzess, Amitza etc. You still need to eat 60% like a rabbit, be active and drink lots of water. I take Linzess every am at 5 am but I also have to take miralax at 8 pm and I take magnesium twice per day. Also with my Linzess I have to drink 4 glasses of water then eat for exactly at 5:30 am without fail and drink more water. I have no movement in my colon. I have been able to avoid an obstruction. If not for this regimen I’d probably been dead it have a colostomy. When I get off my routine it fails so I have to be extremely consistent!

2 ReactionsI have tried Miralax, Dulcilax, stool softeners, drinking more water (although now I can't because of a major issue with low blood sodium). Nothing has helped. Phillips Milk of Magnesia helps a little bit takes a long time to work! I even take Betaine HCL with Pepsin to help metabolize my food since my sigmoid colon was taken. I've had issues my whole life. I have recently used a Fleet liquid glycerin suppository (a little plastic bottle) which worked OK. But went to Gastro doctor this week as I'm really concerned with "lack of movement" and was given Motegrity (prucalopride) and took it yesterday at 2:30 pm and by 5 pm I was on the phone with his office having just had a bowel movement that was not forceful or explosive but emptied me!! I'm hoping now that I'm cleared out I won't be having such bad problems anymore. I will not rely on pills or meds to help me go other then once in a while. Just as information, I have always found taking laxatives dehydrated me, thus making my condition worse!
