Toenail removal aftercare or soaking for ingrown toenails
I wanted to post this information for people dealing with Toenail pain or recovering from Toenail removal surgery.
Supplies:
1 inch or 2inch small gauze rolls
Iodine Solution or Peroxide
Pain-free wrap tape (First Aid Tape)
White paper tape ( First Aid Tape)
Foot Bucket
Epsom Salt ( Foot care aisle)
Soak the foot in a bath of warm water and Epsom Salt for 15 minutes twice a day for three to five days. It helps to soak the foot three times a day if the toenail bed dries out and cause you given greater pain. If it really hurts, quickly dunk the foot in the water three times for the first three days.
Place a cap full of Iodine of Peroxide on the wound rinse the germs off the wound.
Wrap gauze around the toe a couple of times.
Tape with white paper tape.
Wrap with pain-free wrap tape to keep gauze in place.
Cover wrap tape with paper tape to keep the bandage in place.
Wear extra large sock or spa sock to keep foot warm.
The pain will be a 6 or 7 on the pain scale for about a week. The first 72 hours is the worst. My podiatrist says it takes a month for the toenail bed to heal and form a protective layer of thin skin.

Epsom salts make the toe very painful. I don’t know why it’s recommended. It was VERY painful. Stingy and throbbing after soaking.
It’s been about 15 years since I had both big toe nails surgically removed. Both nails had grown in a circular shape, digging into the nail bed. Excruciatingly painful, especially in water and shoes. The surgeon missed a small piece from the right toe’s cuticle but I refused to go back for the one week checkup since I didn’t want it touched. I had been given instructions to soak them 3x/day in a diluted vinegar bath which did nothing. Almost 3 months later and still excruciating/infected, we were going on a cruise and I was ready to back out but my SIL said the salt water would cure them and she was right. Took just a few days. My guess is Epson Salts would work the best.
I know this isn’t a new thread but I’m day 6 and my “non stick” bandage is still sticking. Once I soak it the bandage comes off but I see drainage that’s yellowish and red. Called my podiatrist 3 times today and on 300 mg antibiotics a day but I’m highly susceptible to infection. Should I worry? Don’t have a post op appointment until next week..
I have total numbness in both feet. Is there a treatment, exercise, anything. Please help
What is the cause of your numbness in your feet? Poor circulation, diabetes, neurological disorder and probably a host of other medical ailments...
My husband also has numbness only in his toes due to poor circulation and he is a border-line diabetic. Once it's there, it's there. Impossible to heal BUT you can try to prevent it from getting worse. Try Alpha Lipoic Acid - 600 mg. daily or you can go as high as 1200 mg. daily.
But I would suggest your FIRST step is to see a neurologist for a thorough evaluation of your medical status/condition. There could be something you are not even aware of causing it or even an answer to it. Alpha Lipoic Acid was the only recommendation my husband's neurologist made to hopefully not make it worse. Good luck!
Thanks Rose, I will take ALA 600mg and see a Neurologist.
