← Return to Post COVID - Sinuses fill when I lie down preventing sleep!

@pez

I had Covid just before Christmas/ end of 2021. Since then I have suffered each night when I lie down with Post Nasal Drip /catarrh. I have not had close to a good night’s sleep now since and it’s really affecting my mood and quality of life.

I have considered and been treated for allergies and feel certain my condition is not a reaction to environmental or seasonal allergy – see below:

I have suffered from hay fever, and cat allergies in the past – resulting in streaming nose and eyes – but a simple antihistamine has dramatically reduced my symptoms. With the catarrh, the predominant symptom appears to be the continuous collection of thick mucus (or whatever it is) from behind my nose which I continuously feel the need to draw down into my throat and swallow as I am lying down. I have also been through ten continuous seasons now, and travelled abroad, with no discernible difference to my symptoms.

Regardless of where I am in the world; pets or no pets; carpet or no carpet; indoors or outdoors; or what medication I take the catarrh persists. So far I have taken courses of loratadine, cetirizine, promethazine, fexofenadine hydrochloride, benadryl, prednisolone, flixonase/fluticasone, montelukast, sterimar nasal solution, dymista and doxycycline.

In addition, I have introduced an air purifier into the bedroom, and a humidifier. I also perform regular nasal washes especially before bed and have tried sleeping propped up.

Any combination of the above may have reduced my symptoms by some 10-20%, but I might just have imagined it as some nights are better than others.

I remain convinced that my condition is somehow Covid related as I did not suffer at all with it before I had Covid in 2021, but I have suffered ever since.

Of course I am keen to resolve this issue as I cannot imagine living with it indefinitely – I am so exhausted by it and the resultant insomnia which is really taking its toll. I am SO fed up.

It would be great to know I'm not alone with this problem, and of course any shared remedies would be most welcome.

Thank you.

ps previously posted in ENT before I discovered this page, and have since tried DAO supplements and a low histamine diet to no avail

Just an idea that I didn't see mentioned-- I prop myself up with about 6 pillows when I sleep. Takes a bit of effort to get comfortable, but it does help me sleep better.

I too have suffered this condition after having COVID. Try Standard Process (a brand) Antronex. It is a liver detox supplement. When the liver has trouble detoxing, it exacerbates symptoms in the sinuses. I’m a small person, 125 lbs and I took 3 tabs morning and evening until my symptoms were much better (a couple of weeks), then tapered down to just 1 to 2 once or twice a day. This was a MIRACLE worker for me, my symptoms are 90% better, I can now sleep at night without sinus issues. They have a bottle of 330 tabs for $48. You can go to their website and put in your location information and it will list local locations where you can buy this. Please give it a try and post your results back to this list. It worked so well for me, I’m curious to see if it works for others.

He didn’t say much about it, but that if it worked, great. It was suggested as a solution at my chiropractor’s office. I really didn’t have much faith in it when they suggested it, but I was at my wits end, reading to try anything! But boy does it ever work well, and it isn’t expensive.

Thank you for this post.

I have had the same problem since 2021 and have tried so many of the antihistamines as you. You have also answered my question about different climates and living conditions.
Recently I started using Chestal cough and cold syrup several times a day and it does relieve the symptoms but they will just come back after several hours. I will wake up almost choking with phlegm.

I also read the post from biggsy, in response to yours, detailing Antronex. I will now look into this.

It sounds just like all of us in a group I’ve followed and posted in a number of times, ‘Phlegm in My Throat and Post Nasal Drip’. August 2022 for me. I know I resisted a gastroenterology cause but now being on Famotodine 40mg twice daily I’m feeling some relief. This after rounds with pulmonary - Albuterol and Symbicort, few findings with ENT (how about speech therapy!) and a year of self treatment (chewing gum worked the best). I’m scheduled with gastroenterology in February 2024. So frustrating but mine had moved into constant chest pain and Famotodine has improved that and the gagging phlegm is relieved tremendously. I never thought it could have been Gastro either be since I didn’t experience heartburn but I do think this is it.

You might try Flonase as it shrinks the sinus tissues which reduces the production of nasal fluids and because the passage ways are smaller, allows for the fluids to drain. I hope this helps.

I"m sorry that didn't give you relief.

Same issue.. my doctor recommended sleeping with head lifted.. I also take meds for allergy daily .. never had allergies but after covid my pulmonologist tested me for allergies and discovered allergy for cats, dogs, trees, grass, dust, mold.. After I started meds for allergy my itchy rashes disappeared and post nasal drip significantly improved.. I have a bed with mattress that has a remote that I can’t lift my head up so sleeping that way helps with not waking up as much due to coughing or choking on my own saliva..

My ENT prescribed omeprazole, but i haven’t started taking it yet. Anyone experiencing side effects with the Omeprazole? I have always been relatively healthy, but since having Covid , i have developed uveitis, heart rate increasing with minimal activity, fatigue, and chromic post nasal drip. I am on eye drops - the doctor is having me do a long taper(3 months) because when i tapered over 6 weeks the uveitis recurred. I am using Ryaltris nasal spray, not sure if it is helping . I stopped claritin and then tried allegra. They didn’t work. The dr. Prescribed Singulair which seemed to help, but I was experiencing side effects so i stopped. Then I had allergy testing and started allergy shots three weeks ago. It is too soon to know if that will help. I just want my relatively good health back.

@mimioto , I experienced extreme depression after taking Singulair for about 10 days. I have two friends that take it and don’t have any problems with side effects. It has worked great for them. If i were you, i would definitely give it a try.
