UTI Gram Negative Bacteria

Posted by 815 @815, Sep 19, 2023

I’ve always had UTI’S at least 5 or 6 per year. Antibiotics always took care of it. Recently I’ve been getting Gram Negative UTI that’s almost impossible to get rid of. In May I was hospitalized with Citrobacter Bacteria that caused Sepsis and had IV antibiotics. For the past 3 weeks I’ve been uncomfortably dealing with E COLI, ESBL, MDR another Gram Negative Bacteria that won’t go away. I just finished another dose of Fisfomycin and 5 days after I’m experiencing symptoms again. Anyone else have bad bacteria that won’t clear up. I’m really hoping I don’t have to lay in the hospital again with IV antibiotics and all their horrible side effects.

,,, not sure if allowed to mention the brand here, but went to get some more today on Amazon.ca and they no longer have the ones I use - can get on EBay but I am a creature of habit, so today ordered a different brand. I am on antibiotic right now for uti - symptoms and test strip showed leukocytes and blood ... hated to go to emerge yeserda as they are short staffed - now in Ontario Canada our pharmacists can dispense antibiotics for uit’s. But when I phoned with symptoms he said not an uncomplicated one so go to emerge! Not sure how they diagnose as was told they dont use the test strips now??? Anyway, sample has been sent for a culture which takes five days... had a rough night last night first time ever with one, unable to hold urine in and had a mess to clean up this morning - so maybe there is more gong on... elderly now so everything is falling apart! I have used the test strips for years and although could have false negative or positive, gives a clue to what is going on, IMO. 2nd day on pills and still showing microscopic blood so will see how it goes tomorrow.

Just finished antibiotics yesterday. I see urologist on 10/6. I’m sure she will do another culture. This infection started on 9/4 I’m hoping to get a break before the next one! Thanks for asking.

We really are lucky to get most test results within a couple of hours at the Rochester clinic. Thank you William and Charles. Such great service.

@budisnothome That’s great! I get results quickly as well. It’s the culture that takes 2 days. It sounds like Canada’s system is much different than ours. Sad for the patient that’s hurting and waiting to get on the right antibiotics.

Update!
I had my appointment yesterday with the urologist. Infection is gone for now 🙏. She put me on Methenamine one tablet daily .. this is supposed to kill bacteria in your bladder and not allow it to grow. She also has me taking Florajen probiotic. Has anyone tried these meds and did it help?

I've been on methenamine for years. I started with two tablets per day, along with two capsules of D-Mannose (over the counter). After three years, my doctors & myself believe the methenamine was adversely affecting my kidneys, so they cut me back to only half a tablet once per day (P.M.) and one D-Mannose once per day (A.M.). So far, so good. Because of other immune issues a month ago, I had my first interstitial cystisis flare since 2019 and no bladder infections at all. I hope the drug(s) will help you as much as they have me. Good luck!
